King #NoFilter
*CALLING ALL KING ALUMNI, PARENTS/GUARDIANS, STUDENTS AND STAFF
*

**

**Share your King experience; hear about the experience of others. How
has King changed with the decades? What was middle school like, back in
the day? Or, did you call it “junior high”? Add your voice to
generations of King Alumni, and the King students of today. We want to
hear from you. Support our students and build community.
**

*Join us for the Inter-generational Story Exchange on Tuesday, January
19 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the King staff room
*

**

There will be light refreshments, and opportunities to share stories and
conversation, while exploring the history of King.“Our goal is to create
a beloved community, and this will require a qualitative change in our
souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.”Martin Luther King, Jr.

*WHAT IS KING MIDDLE SCHOOL’S #NoFilter PROJECT?*

**

*Project Background:*

#NoFilter is a project based on the belief that the sharing and
performance of stories can make relationships stronger, empower those
who feel like they have no voice, and bring communities closer together.

#NoFilter is the third in a series of collaborations between Berkeley
Unified School District, the non-profit Community Performance
International (http://communityperformanceinternational.org), CPI
Director, Richard Owen Geer, and Saint Mary’s College in Moraga. The
previous two projects took place in 2014 and 2015 at Thousand Oaks
Elementary, and were known as BRIDGE/PUENTE.

*_How will #NoFilter work at King? _*

**

During the month of January 2016, Richard Owen Geer, King parent, Rachel
Hurwitz, and students from Saint Mary’s College, will work with King
students in a new LEARNS after-school class.

The SMC and King students will become a “Story Bridge team” to collect
stories from the broader King community, develop each other's stories,
and interview prominent community activists, artists, and thinkers about
important topics.

At the same time, students in Lindsay Leopold’s LEARNS after-school
drama classes will develop a theater piece based on the stories
collected by the Story Bridge team. This work will be performed for the
entire King community at the end of Spring Term.

SMC students (and Story Bridge team members) will also share their own
performance and interpretation of select King stories at the King
assembly on January 22, 2016.

*Project Goals:*

#NoFilter is about

-celebrating our school’s diversity,

-listening deeply to stories that might include painful truths,

-finding common ground by seeing the places where our stories overlap,

-and observing where the challenges are.

It is also about trying something new to bring us together as a learning
community.

We hope that the collection and sharing of King stories this January
will spark conversations in our community, build bridges between our
different groups, and deepen our overall connection to each other.
