What others have said about the book:
"These essays encompass the richness of cultures, achievements,
experiences, and points of view within a remarkable urban high school, and
they demonstrate emphatically that there are many different ways to write a
smashingly effective college application essay."
Bob Laird, former director of undergraduate admission, UC Berkeley, and
author of The Case for Affirmative Action in University Admissions
"This is a useful, provocative, and entertaining new book. It is radically
different in wholesome ways from most of the other 'How To' essay books that
crowd the bookstore shelves. And it is a great cultural survey of Berkeley."
Jonathan Reider, director of college counseling at San Francisco University
High School and former admissions officer at Stanford University
"My New York City high school students loved how unique these essays were.
They were really honest, and many of the writers used unexpected and even
everyday stories to communicate who they were, instead of traditional essays
where students just list their talent and successes."
Jessica Marchetti, former teacher at Millennium High School in New York
City, and now assistant principal at Frank McCourt High School, New York
"A beautiful portrait of a diverse, contentious, and delightful group of
young people. They have inherited a world that is often harsh and cruel, but
they have found a way to redeem themselves and us with their generosity,
perseverance, and heart."
Ilene Abrams, college advisor, Envision Academy of Arts and Technology,
Oakland
