We will be hosting an evening presentation for parents and guardians of
juniors on Tuesday, March 12th, at 6:30pm in the BHS Library. College
Advisors Angela Price and Skyler Barton will discuss items related to
preparing for the college application process.

*College Advisors will be hosting class presentations for all juniors
throughout the week of March 4th.  Students will receive folders with
college planning and preparation information packets, and College
Advisors will present the information.  Students will have
opportunities to ask questions as well.

COLLEGE FAIR - Enjoy an opportunity to meet and chat with college admissions
officers and representatives from over 50 colleges/universities.  There is no RSVP required for this portion of the
day (1:00-4:00 p.m.)

CASE STUDIES - The Case Studies Workshop will group students and parents
with college admissions officers to discuss what colleges look for when
admitting students. Learn how college admissions representatives analyze
applications and make their decisions.  Don't miss this great opportunity!
RSVP by March 1st!

SENIORS

*Deadline to submit FAFSA for consideration of initial awards: March 2nd!

*CSU East Bay will accept applications through March 1st!  CSUEB can
be an excellent option for students to consider.

1. Ms. Price and Mr. Barton will continue to provide financial aid
application assistance to BHS seniors, after school from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. on
Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, throughout the month of February.

Steps to be prepared for the Financial Aid Workshops:

(1) Be prepared with student and parent social security numbers or taxpayer
identification numbers.

(2) Bring your family's most recent federal tax forms, such as 1040, W-2,
bank statements, etc. You will not have to reveal this information to
anyone, but you will need it to complete the forms.  If your family's 2012
federal tax returns are not ready yet, bring 2011 tax returns for
estimating.

(3) Submit a Cal Grant GPA Verification Form to our Registrar's Office
(D-173) as soon as possible. You can obtain a form from D-173.  The Berkeley
High School deadline to turn in this form is February 8, 2013.

2. FINANCIAL AID:  The FAFSA and the CA Dream Act application periods are
open from January 1, 2013 - March 2, 2013.  In order to receive the best
financial aid package that you are eligible for, you are highly encouraged
to submit your FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application as early as possible.

If you are planning on applying for financial aid, you and your parents
should sign up for a PIN# at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Applications are now
available for the 2013-2014 school year.

3. IF YOU HAVE NOT SENT IN YOUR TEST SCORES FROM COLLEGEBOARD.ORG OR ACT.ORG
TO THE COLLEGES YOU HAVE APPLIED TO, DO SO ASAP.

Sending Mid-Year Grade Reports:  For schools on the Common App, your
counselor who you have identified to provide a Secondary School Report will
also upload your mid-year report (transcript) online.  For non-Common App
schools that require mid-year reports, you must submit a transcript request
form with a stamped and addressed envelope to our Registrar's Office, D-173.
Please check all of your accounts and school websites for requirements and
deadlines.  We recommend that you check all of your accounts and school
portals at least once per week for updates.

4. CSU PLACEMENT TESTS: CSU requires you to take the English Placement Test
(EPT) and the Entry-Level Mathematics Test (ELM) before you enroll. Your
scores are not used for admission purposes, but they do determine which math
and English courses you should take to begin your career at CSU.  Most
students will have to take the exam, but there are some circumstances under
which you may be exempt.

Seniors: If you are planning on attending a CSU, we encourage you to take
care of this requirement (Placement Tests) early in the spring.

By completing this process early, you will not have to worry about missing
any deadlines for this requirement. Free online preparation for these exams
is available at https://www.ets.org/csu/about/

We recommend adhering to the earliest deadline for any CSU that you've
applied to.  Remember, CSU deadlines are campus specific, and CSU's do not
all share the same deadlines.

A Few CSU's Still accepting Undergraduate Applications for Fall 2013: A
handful of CSU's will continue to accept applications on a space available
basis, including CSU East Bay, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Dominguez Hills, and Cal
Maritime. For a complete list, please visit

 ACT - If you have listed a CSU campus as an ACT score report recipient, you
can use the ACT Scores Manager to release your score to additional campuses.
Before you can use the ACT Scores Manager, you must first have arranged for
your scores to be sent to a CSU campus. If you have not yet arranged for
your ACT scores to be sent to a CSU campus, you can learn how to request
this at

www.actstudent.org/scores/send/index.html.

CSU East Bay: CSUEB offers a variety of academic programs, including highly
regarded business administration options and pre-professional programs in
medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, veterinary
science, allied health sciences, law and theology. To learn more about this

If you have applied to EOP: You may check the status of your recommendation
requests/letters submitted through the CSUMentor application manager. When
you receive a confirmation email of a recommendation letter that has been
submitted on your behalf, be sure to save that email and any other
communication you receive during the application process.

5. SENIOR GRADES COUNT!  Whether you are applying to a private
college/university, CSU, UC, or out of state public school, senior year
grades count!  While you may be admitted to a college in the winter or early
in the spring, this is traditionally a preliminary admittance pending
receipt of your official senior year grades at the end of the year.

6. SAVE THE DATE:  Thursday, Feb. 21st - Berkeley High School College and
Career Center Hosts...Local Community College Information Session!  This
event will be open to all BHS SENIORS. Interested students can come to the
College and Career Center to find out how to register.

2. CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTER OAKLAND, SPORTS MEDICINE
CENTER FOR YOUNG ATHLETES - will be hosting our second annual Conference and
workshop for High School Student Athletic Trainers.
Athletic Training Conference for High School Students
Friday, March 1st 2013, 5:30-8:30PM
Saturday, March 2nd 2013, 8:00AM-5:00PM

This is a great opportunity for any sports medicine minded student to
experience what it is like to attend an actual conference and workshop in
their field of interest. There will be guest speakers on many hot topics, as
well as presentations by practitioners of several professions related to
sports medicine. The students will get a chance to learn hands-on skills and
useful Sports Medicine information that will really get them excited about
our profession!

2 Day Conference includes: Careers in Sports Medicine, Ankle Injuries and Taping Techniques, Knee
injuries and RICE Therapy, Stretching and Flexibility, Low Back Injuries and
CORE Training, Shoulder Injuries and Throwing Mechanics, Video gait and
Running Evaluation, Management of Sports Concussions, Wrist, Hand and Finger
taping techniques

Cost: $99 per student, EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNT $89 BEFORE Feb 4th.  No

2. FREE SAT AND ACT PREP CLASSES (JUNIORS ONLY FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER):

ACT Prep Class - Began on Monday, Feb. 11 in D220.  The class will meet on
Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:40 - 5:30 pm.  Students must register in
advance in the College/Career Center (D221).  Students can register before
school, during lunch or after school. Limited space is available.

SAT Prep Class - Began on Tuesday, Feb. 12 in D220.  The class will meet on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:40 - 5:30 pm.  Students must register in
advance in the College/Career Center (D221).  Students can register before
school, during lunch or after school.  Limited space is available.

Students who are interested in free SAT and ACT test preparation classes
but cannot attend the times listed above may see one of our College Advisors
(Ms. Price or Mr. Barton) for information on Saturday classes offered at the
UC Berkeley campus.

 3. Quest Bridge College Prep Scholarship for Juniors:  This program
provides opportunities designed to help outstanding low-income high school
juniors prepare to apply to top colleges.  Submission of one College Prep
Scholarship application makes a student eligible for several awards,
including; full scholarships to college summer programs, college admissions
conference invitations and all-expense-paid college visits.  For more

New SAT and ACT registration procedures - photos required during
registration! To produce an honest and fair test-taking environment for all
students and prevent test-taker impersonation, the College Board (for SAT
tests) and the ACT testing agency (for the ACT) have implemented enhanced
security measures for all students taking the college entrance tests.
Students will be required to submit a current, recognizable
head-and-shoulders photo that will be printed on the new photo admission

2. CAREER LOCKER:  Do you want to explore career opportunities and possible
majors for college?  Career Locker is a web-based program purchased for
Berkeley High School students for career and college exploration.  Students
can use Career Locker from any location that can access the Internet.  This
program includes assessment tests, occupation and education search tools,
and practice questions for test preparation.  For information on how to set
up your Career Locker account, please see Ms. Price or Mr. Barton in the
College and Career Center.


SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

1. The 2013 Metropolitan Transportation Commission High School Summer
Internship Program is now open for applicants.  The pay rate is $10.55 per
hour.  Each internship will last up to a maximum of 250 hours.  Students may
work full-time or part-time, for up to 10 weeks, between June 19 and August
30, 2013.  For program requirements and information, please visit

2 Berkeley Echo Lake Camp - is accepting applications for the 2013 summer
season!  This is a great opportunity for students to gain valuable
experience working at a youth-based camp near Lake Tahoe.  Students 16 and
older are welcome to apply, all minors under 18 will need a school-issued
work permit for hiring eligibility.  Download applications at

3. The Academic Talent Development Group (Freshman, Sophomores, and
Juniors):  ATDP offers challenging and enriching summer courses for students
who are passionate about and dedicated to learning.  This program is held on
the UC Berkeley campus.  For more information, you may visit

4. AFS - Intercultural Exchange Organization:   The vast majority of AFS
participants take part in the school-based exchange programs, which give
students from all over the world the chance to fully immerse themselves in a
new culture. Participants live with host families and attend a local school
as a full-time student during the course of an academic year, semester or

5. FACES Summer Medical Academy for High School Students:  The FACES
Coalition Summer Medical Academy is a tuition-based, intensive summer
experience designed to expose high school students to the fields of
medicine, nursing and allied health professions.  Offered in partnership
with Samuel Merritt University (SMU) in Oakland, CA, the program dates are
July 8 - July 19, 2013.  For additional information about the program and to

6. Washington University in St. Louis - Architecture Discovery Program
Portfolio Plus Program:  This pre-college program gives students the
opportunity to develop skills and produce work in a real studio.  Students
will pursue specific interests such as Architecture, Ceramics, Communication
Design, Painting, Printmaking/Book Arts, or Textile Design.  Open to
students 16 or older who have completed their sophomore year of high school.

7. UC Berkeley Summer Pre-Collegiate Program: The Pre-Collegiate program
offers you the chance to join the community of more than 250 high school
students who spend their time enjoying a summer at Berkeley. Take advantage
of Berkeley courses, co-curricular activities, and workshops planned just
for you. Spend time on campus taking advantage of all it has to offer, while

8.  USC Summer Programs extends this tradition of excellence to outstanding
high school students through 4 and 2 week summer course options, offering
students a preview of "freshman year" through a variety of college subjects.

9. Cornell University Summer College offers programs in Architecture; Art
and Design; Business; College Success; Engineering; Environmental Studies;
History and Politics; Hotel Management; Humanities; Law and Government;

SCHOLARSHIPS

Students Rising Above - For current Juniors, C/O 2014: Students Rising Above
is looking for high school juniors who have demonstrated strength of
character in the face of challenging odds, and dream of a college education.
Selected students come from low-income households and are rising above
tremendous difficulties and succeeding in school and in life despite their
circumstances at home.  These difficulties include poverty, neglect,
violence, addiction and homelessness. Applicants are required to have a 3.0
GPA, and applications are due on April 4, 2013.  For more information,

QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship - For current Juniors, C/O 2014:
Designed for high school juniors who have shown outstanding academic ability
despite facing economic challenges. Most College Prep Scholars come from
households earning less than $60,000 annually and have experienced long-term
economic hardship. A note about citizenship requirements: U.S. citizens,
Permanent Residents, and international students attending high school in the
United States are eligible to apply for the College Prep Scholarship. For

Wa Sung  Community Service Club Merit Award Scholarship program:  Numerous
$1,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Qualifications include being a
graduating senior of Asian descent, and awardees will be based upon
individual scholastic achievement, involvement in extra-curricular
activities, work experience, community service and financial need.
Applications are available at www.wasung.org, and must be postmarked on or
before April 2, 2013.

Rotary Club of Berkeley:  Scholarship applications are now available in the
College/Career Center. The Berkeley Rotary Scholarship Program is designed
to provide financial and personal support for deserving students attending
high school in the city of Berkeley.  Considerations for scholarships
include financial need, the application package and personal statements and
recommendations.  The program is looking for well-rounded students who
demonstrate they are prepared for college through activities included in
high school, community service activities, work experience and academic
achievement.  Applications are due March 15, 2013.

The Morris C. and Juliet James Achievement Fund: This fund is the major
fund-raising project of the Berkeley Retired Teachers Association, awarding
money to high-achieving graduating Berkeley High seniors.  To be eligible,
you must have attended Berkeley schools for the majority of your public
school education.  You may come to the College and Career Center to receive
an application.  Applications are due by March 12, 2013.

BERKELEY COMMUNITY FUND SCHOLARSHIP:  The Community Fund provides
4-year scholarships and mentoring support for academically talented
and resilient Berkeley High School students.  Application information packets are
available in the College and Career Center.

2013 Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival:  Eligibility includes
being a graduating senior of Japanese American descent with a GPA minimum of
2.5.  Applicants should be actively involved in the community.  Applications
are available in the College/Career Center, and the deadline to apply is
March 19, 2013.

Italian American Federation of the East Bay:  Requirements include being a
senior of Italian ancestry and graduating from a high school in the East
Bay.  Applicants will be evaluated by the following factors: Their
scholastic record, activity and other evidence of leadership and character,
recommendations from faculty, and a personal statement.  Applications are
available in the College/Career Center, and the deadline is April 30.

Splawn Scholarship: Requirements include demonstration of financial need,
minimum 2.6 GPA, and demonstration of paid or unpaid employment, community
service and/or extracurricular activities.  Students who have extraordinary
circumstances in their lives as well as students who may not have the chance
to attend college without financial assistance are encouraged to apply.

Young Women in Public Affairs Awards:  Recognizing young women for their
demonstrated leadership skills and commitment to public service.
Requirements include women who are ages 16-19, demonstration of active
commitment to volunteerism, experience in local or student government,
knowledge of Zonta International and its programs, advocating in Zonta
International's mission of advancing the status of women worldwide. Deadline
is March 15, 2013, and applications are available at www.zonta.org

Ann & Jon Reynolds Scholarship Awards (Seniors):  These scholarships will be
awarded to the successful applicants at $3,000 per year. Two awardees will
be selected.  The eligibility criteria includes a record of community
service involvement, a minimum GPA of 3.0, native born U.S. citizen, and
submission of a Student Aid Report Summary from Federal Student Aid Program.
Applications are available in the College and Career Center.  Application
deadline is April 30, 2013.

NCGA Foundation:  Youth on Course is a program of the NCGA Foundation.
Through the YOC, deserving youth have the opportunity to develop life skills
and values through golf.  Youth who have never had exposure to the game have
access to clinics, on-course play, internship opportunities and
scholarships.  Applicants must meet the requirements of a minimum 3.0 GPA,
and acceptance to a four-year college/university. For instructions, please

April 1, 2013.

Community NETwork (for Seniors):  The Community NETwork awards scholarships
to high school seniors.  The eligibility requirements include; academic good
standing (GPA minimum 2.5), African American senior, intention to enroll in
a four-year or two-year college or university.  Applications are available
in the College and Career Center, and the deadline for submitting
applications is March 1, 2013.

KIWANIS CLUB OF BERKELEY 2013 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  The Scholarship
Committee, based on the strength of the application, will consider
applicants who demonstrate academic ability, leadership and moral integrity,
a commitment to serve their school and community, and the greatest incentive
to continue development of their life goals. Kiwanis, as a service
organization, is especially interested in community service.  Applications
are available in the College/Career Center (D-221), and all submissions are
due on or before Friday, March 1, 2013.

University of Michigan, College of Engineering, Geisinger Scholarship:  For
students considering attending the University of Michigan, College of

 AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP:  The AXA Foundation is the philanthropic arm
of AXA Equitable, directing the company's  philanthropic and volunteer

the country.  This program distributes over $1.3 million per year in
scholarships.  Common qualities in scholarship winners include ambition and
drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family and
