Berkeley High is pleased to announce Allison Smith has signed on as its new
Athletic Director. Ms. Smith is returning to Berkeley High where she was a
PE teacher and department chair for three years before leaving for a
doctoral program in Urban Education at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
"We are very happy we have her," says Vice Principal Kristin Glenchur, "She
knows Berkeley High and she has strong athletic management experience."

After three years of dedicated service as AD, Bill Gaebler will be returning
to teaching and coaching Water polo and Swimming.

One of Ms. Smith's first tasks is moving into the new Stadium/Athletic
building which features-in addition to an Athletic Director's Office-six
Athletic team rooms each with lockers, white boards and technology access; a
snack bar; coaches' offices; training room for the Sports Medicine class;
two new athletic storage rooms; a press box; ticket office; score board; and
bleacher space for more than 3,000 fans.

The new building is opening at the same time the Old Gym is being
demolished. Construction on a new gym will begin sometime in the fall and is
projected to open Spring 2014. That new building will not only house two
new gyms-one of which will be "soft" for sports such as wrestling-but 14 new
classrooms. Once the new classrooms open the 12 portables will be removed
and the softball field rebuilt. The softball field will complement the
Derby Field baseball diamond currently under construction. Derby will
include a soccer field and basketball court.

The Athletic Director runs an impressive program at Berkeley High where more
than one third of the 3,300-student body participates on one or more of the
school's 34 athletic teams. Almost every varsity program participated in
post-season NCS tournament play.

Berkeley High looks forward to joining the new West Alameda Athletic
Conference (WAAC) in 2012-2013, with strong competition against Piedmont,
Bishop O'Dowd, San Leandro, and Arroyo, amongst other highly competitive
schools.
