The Introductory College Level Experience in Microbiology (iCLEM) program is
an 8-week paid summer internship program for high potential, low-income high
school sophomores and juniors who have a passionate interest in science,
technology, engineering or math. While the application process is rigorous,
grades and test scores are not used as gatekeepers. Instead, we place
primary importance on the teacher's recommendation and the applicant's
genuine desire to conduct research and work hard to learn and master the
necessary skills.

Applications for summer 2012 are now being accepted. The application
deadline is March 1.

Program Description: iCLEM teaches basic lab and research skills and
provides students with experience working on a bioenergy research project in
a state-of-the-art molecular biology lab. The teaching staff includes a
Ph.D. level scientist, two credentialed high school science teachers, and
two UC Berkeley undergraduates. In addition to basic science and research,
the program also exposes students to career exploration and preparation for
the college admission process, including field trips to biotech companies,
career talks with scientists, meeting with an admissions officer, and visits
to college campuses. Students are paid a stipend of $1500 plus a scholarship
of $500 upon successful completion of the program.

Program dates & location: iCLEM begins on Wednesday, June 20 and ends on
Thursday, August 9, 2012. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to
5:00 pm. Students must commit to full-time work for all eight weeks of the
program. The lab is at 5885 Hollis Street, Emeryville, CA 94608 and can be
easily reached by free shuttle bus from MacArthur BART.
