While the application process is rigorous, grades and test scores are not used as gatekeepers. Instead, we place primary importance on the teacher's recommendation and the applicant's genuine desire to conduct research and work hard to learn and master the necessary skills.<o:p></o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p></div><div><p class=MsoNormal><u><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Applications for summer 2012 are now being accepted</span></u><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>. <b>The application deadline is March 1.</b><br><br><b>iCLEM info and application</b>: <a href="http://www.synberc.org/iclem_internship">http://qb3.berkeley.edu/iclem/</a>. <br><br><b>Program Description</b>: iCLEM teaches basic lab and research skills and provides students with experience working on a bioenergy research project in a state-of-the-art molecular biology lab. The teaching staff includes a Ph.D. level scientist, two credentialed high school science teachers, and two UC Berkeley undergraduates. In addition to basic science and research, the program also exposes students to career exploration and preparation for the college admission process, including field trips to biotech companies, career talks with scientists, meeting with an admissions officer, and visits to college campuses. Students are paid a stipend of $1500 plus a scholarship of $500 upon successful completion of the program. <br><br><b>Program dates & location</b>: iCLEM begins on Wednesday, June 20 and ends on Thursday, August 9, 2012. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Students must commit to full-time work for all eight weeks of the program. Participating students typically have taken Algebra 1 and basic high school biology.
