Monday evening, Berkeley High School and the District are holding a parent
forum on safety. It will take place in the Berkeley Little Theater from

6:30 to 8:00. We hope that you plan on attending to express your concerns
about recent incidents of guns on campus.

We take these incidents very seriously. Since Tuesday, we have held a
school-wide faculty meeting at Berkeley High to discuss these events,

review school safety procedures, and reiterate the responsibilities of our
staff.

Berkeley High School administrators have started talking with all students
through their social studies classes about weapons on campus -

consequences, dangers, and confidential reporting of information about
weapons. We plan to finish these visits by Wednesday afternoon.

We are scheduling focus groups with students, to be lead by Berkeley High
School staff with the help of professional facilitators. The first of

these groups will be held next Thursday.

We have hired two additional safety officers to work until Spring Break and
later if necessary. We have also added two administrators on a

temporary basis to support these efforts and to provide additional
supervision.

Again, we hope that you will be able to attend Monday night's forum. Leticia
Amezcua, our Parent Resource Center specialist, will be available

to translate into Spanish. We will also be taping the forum; if you cannot
attend, you will be able to view it on www.vimeo.com.
