Dear Families:

 

At approximately 4:15 p.m. on Friday a staff member walking to their car
reported seeing an individual looking into the trunk of a car parked

adjecent to the staff parking lot across the street from campus.. The staff
member noticed a handgun in the trunk as they walked by. Following a

protocol reviewed at yesterday's all staff meeting, the staff member
immediately called 911 and then notified campus safety staff and
administrators.

 

BPD responded quickly and detained an individual who was not a Berkeley High
School student. That individual was in posession of a loaded firearm

and was arrested by BPD. 

 

Four (4) Berkeley High School students were in close proximity to the
incident and were detained and questioned, but eventually released. BHS

administrators will continue to thoroughly investigate the matter to rule
out any indirect involvement by BHS students.

 

Although this matter occured after school there were still kids on campus so
we obviously took every precaution. Administrators and safety staff

worked with Berkeley PD to temporarily close the sidewalks on either side of
Milvia between Kittridge and Durant until the incident was resolved.

Gates on the east side of campus along Milvia were temporarily closed as
well to prevent any students from walking out into the vicinity of the

incident. We are pleased to report that no one was hurt as a result of this
incident.

 

On a day filled with positive classroom conversations with students wherein
administrators clarified expectations and consequences for

bringing a weapon to campus, we end the week knowing that we must continue
to be hyper-conscious of the concerns raised by this week's events. We

will continue to commit all available resources and work with community
members and partnering agencies to eliminate the presence of weapons on

and around our campus.

 

I look forward to a constructive dialogue at Monday evening's parent forum.
The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Florence Schwimley

Theater here on the BHS campus.
