SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  INTER -- to bury in the earth.  It is customary to inter U.S. war veterans at Arlington National Cemetery.  

FOR JUNIORS

*TODAY - SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- May 5 is the regular registration deadline for the June 6 SAT and SAT subject tests. May 8 is the regular registration deadline for the June 13 ACT.  These are the last tests offered before September 2009.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS -- Cal Trans is sponsoring a two-week Summer Engineering Institute at San Francisco State from July 19-31.  Cost -- FREE.  Students live on campus to explore engineering.  For more information, go to http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/sei2009/ or call 510-286-6108.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  May 22.  

UCLA World Music Summer Institute -- This week-long intensive music study program (June 21-27) is available in one of four areas: Chinese, Mexican, Korean and African-American.  The program is open to students/musicians ages high school through adult.  Supervised housing is available for high school students.  Students can earn 2 UC credits.  For more information, go to http://www.summer.ucla.edu/institutes/WorldMusic/overview.htm or e-mail uclawmsi at gmail.com

FOR SENIORS

*Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) open travel program for college students -- Dandole Alas a Tu Exito/Giving Flight to Your Success.  A panel of judges comprised of college professors and education advocates from coast to coast will gather in the summer to select the students who will receive free travel to their colleges and universities.  Each student is eligible to receive from one to four tickets that the student or an immediate family member can use in the Fall 2009 to travel to/from a college or university.  The travel tickets are awarded to undergraduate and graduate Hispanic students with socio-economic need who journey away from home to pursue higher education.  Essay required.  To view the criteria for the 2009 award program, www.southwest.com .  Applications available at http://www.hacu.net/hacu/Lanzate_EN.asp?SnID=33099403. NOT HAPPY WITH YOUR COLLEGE CHOICES?  A list of colleges that are still accepting applications will be available beginning on Tuesday, May 5.  See your college advisor for more information.  

STUDENTS PLANNING TO ATTEND A UC CAMPUS -- If you are planning to attend a UC campus, you must take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam on Saturday, May 9 unless you meet one of the following criteria:  30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; or 680 or better on the SAT-II Writing Test; or 680 or better on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section; or 3, 4 or 5 on either Advanced Placement (AP) Examination in English; or completing with a C or better an acceptable college course in English composition (for example, English 1A at a community college). The test will be offered at Berkeley High School.  You do not need to register to take the test.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Bay Area Gardeners Foundation -- Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who have financial need who are willing to do 20 hours or more of community service each semester and who live in one of the 9 Bay Area counties.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 17.  

Greater San Francisco Advertising Club -- Open to high school seniors who are planning to attend college in the fall and have an interest in the areas of advertising, communications, design, journalism, marketing or media.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  May 5.

Check Center Scholarship -- Open to graduating senior from Berkeley High School with a minimum 2.5 GPA who will attend a vocational/training school, 2 year or 4 year college or university in the fall.  Two scholarships of $500 each will be awarded.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  May 11.

Los Hermanos de Stanford -- Open to outstanding Latino seniors who plan to attend a two or four year college in the fall and has financial need.  Students are NOT REQUIRED to attend Stanford. Two $800 scholarships will be awarded Applications available at www.stanford.edu/group/hermanos/scholarships.html and in D221. Deadline:  May 15.

Salvadoran American Leadership & Educational Fund (SALEF) -- Open to students of Central American or other Latino ethnicity who demonstrate financial need, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, demonstrate a history of community involvement and reside in SF Bay Area or Los Angeles Area.  
US citizenship or permanent residency NOT required.  Applications  available in D221. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.  Deadline:  June 30.  

LAHF Dise/Gardere/Smith Scholarship Fund -- Open to any low-income high school senior going to college fall 2009.  There will be two scholarships awarded $1,000 each. Deadline: May 15. Applications available in D221.
