SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  INTEGRITY -- honesty; moral fiber.  Some
colleges have honor codes that students agree to follow; such systems
appeal to the students' integrity to refrain from cheating and
plagiarism.  

*COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF JUNIORS --
Tuesday, February 3, 6:30-8:30 pm in the Berkeley High library.  Enter
at 1980 Allston Way.  Angela Price and I will provide an overview of
all aspects of the college admissions process.  This meeting is for
adults only since the students will be receiving this information in
their English classes.  Spanish translation is available. Come with
all of your questions! 

FOR ALL STUDENTS 
Black College Expo -- Saturday, January 24, 9:00 am-6:00 pm, Oakland
Army Base, 2498 W. 20th Street, Building 807, Oakland.  Bring
transcripts and test scores and be accepted on the spot to some
schools.  Nearly 100 colleges and universities will be present.  Find
out about internships, jobs and careers.  Attend seminars on
admissions and financial aid.  Tickets are $10. 

CSF -- CSF community service forms and fundraising for fall 2008 are
due THIS Friday, January 16 in the College/Career Center.  Send any

Latino Education Summer at Cal State East Bay -- Saturday, January 24,
8:00 am to 1:00 pm.  The FREE summit is open to the public. Parents,
high school and junior high school students, school administrators,
teachers, counselors, and business and community leaders are
encouraged to attend. Topics covered in the workshops and panels (in
English and Spanish) will include college information resources;
student life experiences on campus; college admissions; and financing
a college education through grants, scholarships, and financial aid.
Also, on-the-spot admission will be available for Cal State East Bay
eligible high school seniors who have submitted an application through
the CSU Mentor program and provided transcripts to the university by
Jan. 10.  Further information is available at

lunch and continental breakfast will be provided at the Latino Summit
and a drawing for a computer also will be held. Register at

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Stanford Medical Youth Science Program -- 5 week summer residential
program at Stanford open to economically disadvantaged and
under-represented sophomore and junior high school students who are
interested in science, health and medicine careers and are going to be
the first in their family to attend college.  Applications available
in D221 and at http://smysp.stanford.edu .  Deadline:  February 28.

Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program -- an 8 week
research program at Stanford for students graduating from high school
in 2009 and 2010.  Program dates:  June 15-August 7.  Application
deadline:  February 2.  For more information and to apply, go to

Summer Math & Science Honors Academy (SMASH) Information Night --
Thursday, January 29, 6:30 pm at the Level Playing Field Institute,
543 Howard St., 5th Floor, SF.  RSVP is required at 415-946-3033 or
shannon at lpfi.org by January 21.  Space is limited.  Find out more
about SMASH, a three-year academic enrichment program held each summer
for six weeks on the UC Berkeley campus.  The program assists
high-achieving high school students of color from underrepresented
populations to become competitive and successful in science,
technology, math and engineering studies at competitive colleges and

FOR SENIORS
IT'S TIME TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID - Sign up to attend one of the
workshops on filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA).  Prior to the workshop, pick up a FAFSA On the Web Worksheet
in the College/Career Center or download one at
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/fafsaws90bw.pdf  and fill it out as much as
you can.  You can estimate numbers if necessary.  YOU MUST SIGN UP IN
ADVANCE TO ATTEND BECAUSE WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF COMPUTERS.  All
workshops will be held in the BHS library.

*MID-YEAR REPORT -- THIS WAS DUE JANUARY 15!  TURN IN ASAP IF YOU ARE
APPLYING TO ANY SCHOOLS THAT REQUIRE YOUR FIRST SEMESTER GRADES! If
you applied to any colleges which require your first semester grades,
Mid-Year Report Forms are due to Ms. Mellion in D173 no later than
January 15.  Turn in the Mid-Year Report Form that is part of the
college's application along with a Transcript Request Form with “Mid
Year Report” written across the top and a stamped envelope (4 1/8 x 9
½” with one 42 cent stamp) addressed to the office of admissions of
the college with a return address of Berkeley High School, 1980
Allston Way, Berkeley, CA  94704. The UC's do not require a mid-year
report.  

The financial aid booklet "Fund Your Future" is now available.  Stop
by the College/Career Center to pick up your copy and get important
information on the ins and outs of financial aid, Cal Grant, and other
state and federal aid programs.  

SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- January 16 is the regular registration deadline
for the February 7 ACT.  February 10 is the regular registration
deadline for the March 14 SAT.  Fee waivers for low income students
are available in D221.  

SCHOLARSHIPS

Black Employees' Association of PG&E -- Open to graduating high school
seniors or continuing college students regardless of ethnicity who
have a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000.
Applications available in D221. Deadline:  March 6, 2009

Hispanic Employee Association of PG&E -- Open to seniors or current
college students of any ethnicity who live in a PG&E service area.
Scholarships range from $500-$1,500.  Applications available in D221.
Deadline: February 27.

Women's Network Employee Association of PG&E -- Open to all
college-bound high school senior women who have a minimum GPA of 3.0
who are planning to attend college in the fall, are pursuing a degree
in engineering, IT, business, environmental or other majors related to
the energy field and have demonstrated leadership through active
involvement in community organizations, academic or vocational
activities or student organizations.  Applications available in D221.
Deadline:  April 20.

Black Employee's Association of PG&E -- Open to all graduating high
school seniors or continuing college students who have a minimum GPA
of 2.5.  Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000.  Applications
available in D221. Deadline:  March 6.  

Filipino Employees Association of PG&E -- Open to all college-bound
seniors applying to two or four year college regardless of ethnicity
who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and is an active participant and/or leader
in school and the community.  At least ten $1,000 to $2,000
scholarships will be awarded.  Applications available in D221.
Deadline:  March 6.  

Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) Alzheimer's Awareness
Scholarship -- Open to seniors who are US citizens or permanent
residents who write an essay on the impact Alzheimer's disease has on
their own lives and others in their family and community.  Deadline:
February 15.  One scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded.  

Mahatma Rice Scholarship - Write an essay on "How will your college
education help you to achieve your lifetime goals?" Open to US
citizens or permanent residents who are residents of the San
Francisco/San Jose area.  Brochures available in D221. Start your
application online at www.mahatmarice.com/scholarship .  After
registering, you can print out the application. 
Five $2,000 cash awards will be made.  Deadline:  February 16.
