SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  ACUITY – sensory sharpness; keenness.  Cats have  
developed excellent visual acuity because before they were  
domesticated, they needed to hunt their prey, often at night, in order  
to survive.

*I will be away from school on Monday, April 30 and the morning of May  
1.  Seniors, if you have questions or concerns about your college  
choices, please see me today or tomorrow at lunch or after school.

JOB OPENINGS
Meyer Sound Labs has 4-6 paid summer internships for high school  
students (must be 16 year old) in manufacturing operations doing  
assembly or data entry type work. Interns must commit to a minimum of  
6-8 weeks for 30 hours per week. Interested students can either stop by  
Meyer Sound at 2832 San Pablo Ave. (near Ashby) between 8:30 AM and 5  
PM to fill out an application, or can email hr at meyersound.com. To learn

Social Security Administration in Richmond is looking for 10 or more  
students for general office work including answering phones, filing,  
photocopying, etc, to work full-time Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week,  
during the summer.  Students must be at least 16 years old with a  
minimum GPA of 2.0 and must be either a U.S. citizen or permanent  
resident or otherwise authorized to be employed.  Students from low  
income families will receive priority in hiring.  Applications  
available in D221.  Priority deadline:  May 11.

FOR SENIORS
*URGENT - Did you file your FAFSA by March 2nd, list a California  
college on the FAFSA and turn in a gold GPA Information Release Form to  
Ms. Mellion or your counselor or College Advisor by March 2nd?  If you  
did, but have not received a letter from the Cal Grant agency or have  
been told that they did not receive your GPA, please see Ms. Abrams or  
Mr. Saraceno in D221 immediately.

*A representative of the U.S. Air Force will be speaking in the  
College/Career Center on Monday, April 30 during fifth period.  Sign up  
in D221 to attend.

Are you interested in becoming an apprentice and learning a trade?   
There are many excellent apprentice programs available.  Check out this  
excellent web site to find out about them at  
http://www.calapprenticeship.org as well as to get information on all  
of the trades.  Most of these are very well paying jobs!

If you would like to discuss your options for next year or need help  
understanding and comparing your financial aid packages, please stop by  
to see me or Mr. Saraceno any day at lunch or after school.

MAY 1 DEADLINE – May 1 is the deadline to send in your Statement of  
Intent to Register (SIR) to most colleges and universities.  For most  
schools, if you do not send in your SIR and your deposit (if required)  
by May 1, you will not be able to attend that school in the fall.  You  
may only send in a SIR to one school.  It is unethical to tell more  
than one school that you plan to attend their college.  If you have any  
questions at all, please stop by to see me or Mr. Saraceno at lunch or  
after school.

If you were waitlisted at a school that you wish to attend, you very  
likely will not hear whether you have been admitted from the waitlist  
before May 1.  Therefore, you must send a Statement of Intent to  
Register (SIR) to one of the schools where you have been admitted no  
later than May 1.  If you are then admitted to the school where you  
were waitlisted, you can tell the school where you sent the SIR that  
you have been admitted off the waitlist of your first choice school and  
tell the school where you were originally waitlisted that you will be  
attending there in the fall.

The following Cal State campuses are still accepting applications:  Cal  
Maritime, Bakersfield, Chico, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Fullerton  
(computer science and engineering only), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay,  
Northridge, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Stanislaus, Humboldt (will  
close on May 31), San Jose, and Sonoma (except interdisciplinary  
studies, liberal studies and pre-nursing majors).

FOR JUNIORS
The Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium (BAHYS), a three day college and  
career access program for high school sophomores and juniors, will be  
held this summer from June 29-July 1 at St. Mary’s College of  
California in Moraga.  Students will spend the night in the dorms and  
stay on campus during the symposium.  In addition to the workshops  
there will be four competitions (Essay, Talent, Speech and Art) where  
students can compete for scholarships ranging from $500 - $2000, which  
will be awarded at the end of the symposium.   The deadline to apply is  
April 30th, 2007.  Students can apply at www.hispanicyouth.org.  There  
are still slots available for eligible students. Cost:  $10.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – April 27 is the regular registration deadline for  
the June 2 SAT test.  Register at www.collegeboard.com. May 4 is the  
regular registration deadline for the June 9 ACT test.  Register at  
www.act.org.

FOR ALL GRADES
Volunteer at the California Shakespeare Theater.  This year’s  
performances include Richard III, Man and Superman, Triumph of Love and  
King Lear.  Performances begin on May 30 and end on October 14.  Come  
to D221 for a volunteer form and the performance schedule.  This is a  
great opportunity to see the shows for free!

THIS SATURDAY, April 28, 1:00-4:30 pm – St. Mary’s College Fair.  This  
is the biggest college fair in the East Bay.  Representatives from over  
175 different colleges and universities will be available to speak with  
you. In addition, come to free workshops on admissions, financial aid,  
the UC, Cal State and community college systems, recruited athletes and  
Historically Black Colleges and Universities.  Sessions will also be  
held in Spanish.  For more information, go to

Take the bus from Berkeley High to the St. Mary’s College Fair!   
Purchase a $2 ticket from Ms. Harris in D221.  The bus will leave at  
12:30 and return you by 4:00 pm.  You can also take BART to the Orinda  
BART station and take the free shuttle to St. Mary’s College from  
there.

Summer Day Camp Jobs – Counselor in Training (completed grade 9, 10 or  
11, a volunteer position) and Junior Counselor (completed grade 10, 11  
or 12, may receive a weekly stipend).  Work with campers ages 5-14.   
Students can work for 4, 6 or 8 weeks from June 18-August 24,  
Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm.  Apply online at the UC Berkeley Department of

Aspire Education Project offers SAT and ACT practice tests at Piedmont  
High School, Room 39 at 9:00 am.  These are generally held one week  
before the actual test.  Test dates are on Saturdays: May 26 and June 2  
and Sunday, April 29 and students may take either test on each day.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Nancy Elizabeth Branch Scholarship – Open to African-American seniors  
planning to attend a four year college in the fall.  Essay and letter  
of recommendation required.  Deadline:  May 31.  Application available  
in D221.  Scholarship:  $1,000.

Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California Scholarship – Open  
to U.S. citizens with a Japanese ancestry or legal Japanese residents  
of the U.S. who have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.30 who have  
demonstrated academic interests in the study of fields of US-Japanese  
relationship and plan to attend an accredited college or university in  
the fall.  Two scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded.  Received  
deadline:  June 8.

*GPA REQUIREMENT REDUCED TO 3.0!! - Scates Scholarship – open to  
African American male seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum  
1500 SAT score with a commitment to the community who will be entering  
a four year college in the fall.  Several scholarships of varying  
amounts will be awarded.  Received deadline:  April 27.  Applications  
available in D221.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Oakland East Bay Alumnae Chapter – Open to  
African American seniors with a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or  
higher who have demonstrated community service, leadership ability and  
have financial need who are planning to attend a four year college or  
university.  $1,000 scholarship each.  Deadline:  April 28.   
Applications available in D221.

Richard D. Navies Scholarship – Open to graduating seniors who are U.S.  
citizens or legal residents who are a varsity athlete this year, has a  
minimum GPA of 2.5 and minimum ACT score of 20 or SAT score of 900 who  
demonstrate leadership and commitment to service and have good  
sportsmanship and a positive attitude.  Two scholarships of $2,500  
each.  Deadline:  May 1.  Applications available in D221.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
Public Glass, San Francisco’s center for creation and education in the  
glass arts, is offering summer workshops for students ages 14-18.  Each  
workshop is one week long and meets Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-3:00 pm and  
costs $700.  Beginning workshop – June 18-22; Intermediate – July 9-13  
and Advanced – July 23-27.  For more information, go to

We have applications for numerous summer programs.  Some are academic  
programs based in colleges around the country while others volunteer  
and language immersion programs around the world.  Many offer  
scholarship programs for low income students.  Check them out in our
