SAT WORD OF THE DAY:    FRUGAL- conservative in spending; thrifty.  
Homer Simpson spends extravagantly on cheeseburgers and Duff beer, but 
is quite frugal when it comes to clothing and education.

JUNIOR PARENTS – If you missed the Junior Parent College meeting on 
Tuesday, February 6, you may borrow the DVD of the meeting for up to 
two nights.  Please e-mail me, including your name, student name and 
phone number, and I will let you know when the DVD is available.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory provides talented high school 
students from the San Francisco Bay Area with paid summer internships 
in science, engineering, technology, computing sciences, and related 
areas. In 2006, over 241 students applied and 48 were selected. 
Selection is based on the applicant's grades, especially in science and 
mathematics courses, and demonstrated commitment to a future career in 
the sciences, engineering, computer sciences, or related field. One 
teacher recommendation is requested and is an important factor. High 
school student interns work 40 hours a week for six weeks from June 
27th through August 10th and receive a stipend. They will also have the 
opportunity to create a resume, attend lectures and seminars and 
participate in a variety of workshops.   For more information or

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - The Over 60 Clinic at Sacramento and Alcatraz is 
looking for student volunteers to help in their medical records 
department after school.  Please call 428-4524 and speak with Mary Ann 
Hegeman.

CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION (CSF) – Applications for the spring 
semester are now available in the College/Career Center, D221.  
Completed applications, a copy of last semester's report card and $1 
membership dues (cash only) are due in D221 by Tuesday, February 20.  
Community service logs are also available in D221.  Three hours of 
community service and $15 of fundraising (cash only) are due by June 6.

TODAY - Are you interested in studying abroad during the summer or for 
a semester?  Intrax Study Abroad offers 45 cultural programs in 17

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
*JUNIORS – the first day that you can sign up for individual 
appointments with your College Advisor is on Thursday, February 15 at 
8:00 am in D221.  The sign-up sheets will remain up for the rest of the 
semester.  If your last name starts with A-La, sign up with Ms. Abrams; 
Le-Z sign up with Mr. Saraceno.

JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP – Students Rising Above Program of KRON TV – this 
scholarship is for students who have overcome tremendous obstacles and 
want to go to college.  These difficulties may include poverty, 
neglect, violence, homelessness or serious illness.  Scholarship 
amounts are based on viewer donations as well as student financial 
need.  Students must be a US citizen or permanent resident with a GPA 
of 3.0 or above living in the Bay Area.  Applications available in 
D221.  Applications must be received by KRON by April 4.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS – Nordstrom Scholarship application is 
available in D221.  The scholarship is open to juniors with an 
unweighted GPA of at least 2.7 who have financial need to go to 
college.  The student must attend an accredited college-level 
institution for four years.  The scholarship is for $10,000 and will be 
paid over four years in installments of $2,500.   Deadline:  May 31.

FOR SENIORS
*City College of San Francisco is now accepting applications for their 
Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program.  This is an excellent 
two-year program in which students earn an  Associate of Science Degree 
and an Award of Achievement in Culinary Arts, Food Service Management 
or Hotel Management.  Graduates of this program have transferred to 
many different four year colleges to earn a a bachelor's degree.

April 9.

FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS – We will be holding workshops on filling out 
the FAFSA both before and after school. All workshops will be held in 
the BHS library.  Please sign up in D221 so that we make sure that we 
have enough computers for everyone.  Bring with you completed 2006 tax 
returns and/or information on  income for you and your parents from any 
source for 2006 as well as information on assets for you and your 
parents.  This information will not be shared with anyone. In order to 
best prepare for the workshop, pick up a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet in 
D221 prior to the workshop.  Then you can fill out the requested 
information and know what your questions are.  The dates for the 
workshops are:

Wednesday, February 28, 3:30 pm

CAL GRANTS – Cal Grants are free money from the state of California 
based on the student’s GPA and family income. The money may be used at 
any accredited California college, public or private. Applying for the 
Cal Grant is very easy – just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2 
listing a California college to receive the information and fill out 
the Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221.  
This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to complete. 
  Deadline to turn in the form is February 15.

CAL STATE APPLICATIONS – many Cal State campuses are still accepting 
applications.  They are:  Cal Maritime, Bakersfield, Channel Islands, 
Chico, Dominguez Hills (deadline is April 1), East Bay, Fullerton (open 
only to Computer Science and Engineering majors), Humboldt (tentative 
deadline is June 1), Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Northridge, Sacramento, 
San Bernardino, San Jose (deadline is March 1), San Marcos, Sonoma 
(deadline February 28) and Stanislaus.  If you need help with your 
applications, see Ms. Abrams or Mr. Saraceno in D221.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES –  TODAY - February 14 is the late registration 
deadline for the March 10 SAT test.  Register at www.collegeboard.com. 
March 9 is the regular registration deadline for the April 14 ACT test. 
  Register at www.act.org.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Rotary Club of Berkeley – open to seniors with financial need who would 
otherwise have difficulty paying to attend a four year college.  Also 
taken into consideration are academic standing, test scores, 
extracurricular activities.  Applicants cannot be relatives of a living 
Rotarian.  Scholarships of $5,000 per year, renewable for four years.

Robert T. Nahas Scholarship Award – Requirements: Graduating senior 
from an Alameda County public or private high school; a record of 
community service for at least two years; minimum GPA of 3.0; competed 
in a competitive sports program for at least two years; U.S. citizen, 
native born; proof of admission to a four year accredited college.  
Deadline:  April 30.  Two male and two female awardees will each 
receive $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000.  Applications available 
in D221.

George P. Scotlan Scholarship Award – Requirements: Graduating senior 
from an Alameda County public or private high school; a record of 
community service for at least two years; minimum GPA of 3.0; have 
financial need; U.S. citizen, native born; proof of admission to a four 
year accredited college.  Deadline:  April 30.  Three awardees will 
each receive $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000.  Applications 
available in D221.

Vietnamese Physician Association of Northern California – Open to 
seniors of Vietnamese descent with financial hardship who are planning 
to attend college in summer or fall of 2007 with a minimum GPA of 3.5.  
Deadline:  April 16.  Scholarship of $1,000.  Applications available in 
D221.

Berkeley Retired Teachers Association Scholarship – Open to Berkeley 
High seniors who have spent the majority of their school age years in 
Berkeley Unified School District.  Scholarship amounts vary.  Deadline: 
  March 30.  Applications available in D221.

Beach Blanket Babylon Scholarships for the Arts – winners in voice, 
acting and dance categories.  One winner from each category will be 
awarded a $10,000 scholarship.  Application available in D221 and at 
www.beachblanketbabylon.com . Deadline:  April 20.

Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship – open to Berkeley High seniors who 
will be attending a two or four year college in the fall with a minimum 
GPA of 2.5.  Scholarships range from $500-$4,000.  Deadline:  March 12.

Kiwanis Club Scholarship – Open to graduating seniors.  One scholarship 
is for students who are planning to attend a four year college.  The 
other is for students who are planning an alternative or trade school 
path.  Essay and recommendations are required.  Deadline:  March 29.  A 
total of $40,000 will be awarded.  Applications available in D221.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS
Below are a few of the summer opportunities available.  Check out the 
“Summer” box in the College/Career Center to read about many more.

Yosemite Institute – 9-14 day trips during the months of July and 
August. Trips include backpacking, whitewater rafting, wilderness 
leadership, rock climbing, scientific field research, and backcountry 
skills, such as route finding, map and compass use, outdoor leadership, 
cooking, and leave-no-trace principles. Cost: $1,175-1,550 depending on

Experiment in International Living – 3-5 week cultural and language 
immersion summer programs in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe.

UCLA Summer Programs – Attend classes, institutes and specialty 
programs in the performing and visual arts at UCLA, as well as a 
variety of other disciplines.  Class lengths vary and most offer a 
residential option that includes supervision,a schedule of activities
