SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  ESPOUSE – to agree with a particular viewpoint.  
Because he could not espouse the positions of either the Republican or 
Democratic parties, Ross Perot tried to establish a new independent 
party.

TONIGHT - SENIOR PARENTS – TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the 
Berkeley High School library, Sue Kim, a financial aid consultant, will 
give an overview of need based financial aid, how the Estimated Family 
Contribution is calculated and merit based aid.  There will be a second 
financial aid night on December 7 where we will walk through the FAFSA, 
a form which is required by all colleges when applying for financial 
aid.

JOB INFORMATION
* City of Berkeley YouthWorks Program will pass out applications for 
after-school jobs from
Oct 2, 2006 to Oct 31, 2006 at 1947 Center St., Basement level, 
YouthWorks Employment Services.  These applications are for 
after-school employment positions.  They are open
only to Berkeley residents ages 14 to 19.  Call 981-4970 for more 
information.

After school office job for reliable student with some computer skills 
(MAC is best), assisting in a home office of a local musician and 
community activist. Tasks include email list upkeep, some banking, 
shipping of CD's, some typing (speed not important), possibly some 
simple web updating (will train). Northwest Berkeley location.  2-3 
hours a week. Great for a student interested in the arts, women's

The Albany YMCA is looking for a Girls Volleyball Instructor, 
Wednesdays 3:30-5:00pm.  The class is a recreational fun class for 
beginners designed to introduce middle school girls (grades 5-8) to the 
rules and techniques of the game while learning team dynamics in a 
supportive environment. A paid position with YMCA membership included. 
Must have experience playing on a volleyball team, love and knowledge 
of the game and be over 16 years of age.  For more information, please

Albany Physical Therapy is looking for a student to work approximately 
six hours per week (two hours per day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) to 
help with office responsibilities.  They offer flexible hours and job

Looking for a job?  Berkeley Public Library is hiring 5 student 
workers. These jobs involve assisting Teen Services librarians in a 
variety of tasks and working with library materials. The application 
period ends on Sept 30, 2006. Pick up and return the completed 
applications to the 2nd floor Reference Desk at the Central Library. 
You must be at least 16 years old. Successful applicants can expect to

PSAT – Attention all sophomores and juniors:  Sign-up for the PSAT!  
The deadline is THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6.   Go to the D building ticket 
window on Allston Way at lunch and after school until 4 p.m. The fee 
for the test is $22.00 cash or money order payable to Berkeley High 
School. This is a great test to take as practice for the SAT.  Colleges 
will never see your scores and you can use it to plan which areas of 
the test you need to study most.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Gates Millennium Scholarship – open to students who are African 
American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander or Hispanic American, 
are a US citizen or permanent resident, have a minimum unweighted GPA 
of 3.3, will be enrolling at a US college or university as a full time 
freshman student, demonstrated leadership, and is meets the federal 
eligibility requirements for a Pell grant.  The scholarship pays the 
entire cost of an undergraduate education.  Deadline:  January 12 – but 
start early as you must get a nomination and a recommendation and fill 
out a lengthy application.
