SAT WORD OF THE DAY: DEPRECATE - to express strong disapproval of.
Doug stopped offering new ideas after the other workers deprecated
his first suggestion.

I will be out of the office today for jury duty.  There will be no
College Advisor's Bulletin on May 11.

JUNIORS - There are now many openings for appointments with either
Ms. Abrams or Mr. Stringfellow.  If you have not already had an
appointment or missed a previous one, sign up now in D221 before they
are gone.

JOB OPENINGS
*Student needed for garden work near Live Oak Park - 3-5 hours per
week, after school and Saturdays, times are flexible.  Salary: $8-10
per hour.  Sophomore or junior student preferred.  For more

Seniors - Full time summer jobs available with the Social Security
Administration, 1221 Nevin Avenue, Richmond, across from the Richmond
BART station.  Pay:  $11.34 per hour.  Low income students are given
priority for employment.  Applications available in D221.  

Meyer Sound Labs has 5-7 paid summer internships for high school
students (must be 16 year old) in manufacturing operations doing
assembly or data entry type work. Interns must commit to a minimum of
6-8 weeks for 30 hours per week. Interested students can either stop
by Meyer Sound at 2832 San Pablo Ave. (near Ashby) between 8:30 AM
and 5 PM to fill out an application, or can email hr at meyersound.com.

interesting classes to improve your skills and GPA over the summer.

SENIORS
*Latino College Day at Laney College - Saturday, May 20, 1:00-4:00
p.m.  Get information on vocational programs, transferring to a four
year college, financial aid and housing.  For more information, go to

*June 2 - Last day for students to turn in a Transcript Request Form
to Ms. Mellion in D173 so that we can send an official transcript to
the school you will be attending in the fall.  Write "FINAL
TRANSCRIPT" in capital letters across the top of the form and
paperclip it to a stamped business size envelope addressed to the
college, with Berkeley High School (1980 Allston Way, Berkeley 94704)
as the return address.  If you are under 18, please remember to have
your parent or guardian sign the request form.  All colleges require
that students send them a final transcript confirming their senior
year grades.

If you are getting below a C in any of your classes and are planning
to attend a four year college in the fall, you MUST contact the
college to discuss this.  All colleges will receive a copy of your
final transcript.  By contacting the college and discussing your
options with them, you may be able to prevent your admission from
being rescinded.  Please see me if you would like to discuss your
grades or what to say to the college.

Planning on taking a year off before going to college?  Not sure what
to do?  Check out the Dynamy program, a residential internship
program with sites in Massachusetts and Santa Rosa, CA.  The program
offers students the opportunity to work in three different full-time
internship placements as well as a wilderness expedition, community
service, residential living with other interns, and optional college
seminars.  This is a well-known and reputable program.  For more

SCHOLARSHIPS
CSF Sealbearer - You must be a member of CSF for at least 4
semesters, including
one semester during senior year; demonstrate financial need, and plan
to attend

Nancy Elizabeth Branch 2006 African-American Scholarship - Open to
African-American seniors planning to attend a four year college.
Applications available in D221.  Scholarship:  $1,000.  Deadline:
May 31.  

Berkeley Chamber of Commerce Scholarship - Scholarships awarded on
the basis of scholastic achievement, financial need, citizenship,
leadership, service and employment. Parent must be a member of the
Berkeley Chamber of Commerce. $1,000.  Deadline:  June 15.

University of Rochester - Saturday, May 20, 10:00 a.m., San Francisco

May 22 - Representatives from Haverford, Colorado College, Kenyon,
Connecticut College, Claremont McKenna, Macalester, Sarah Lawrence
and Grinnell will host an informational meeting at the Westin SF
Airport, 1 Old Bayshore Highway, Millbrae starting at 7:00 p.m.  

SAT/ACT TEST DATES - May 10 is the late registration deadline for the
June 3 SAT.  May 19 is the late registration deadline for the June 10
ACT.  Students may register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com or
for the ACT at www.act.org.  There are also paper registration
applications for both tests available in D221.  

ALL STUDENTS
Summer Reading Skills Program - sponsored by Cal State East Bay,
these classes are available for students of all grades.  Classes
offered in Berkeley and Oakland.  Information available in D221 or by
calling 1-800-978-3532.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Volunteer opportunity - The Museum of Children's Art in Oakland is
seeking High School students interested in working with younger
children (ages 5-12) for Art Apprentice positions at its Summer Art
Camp.  Art Apprentice teens work to assist the Art teachers and will
be responsible for helping campers to create fun art projects.
Experience in both art and leadership important but not required.
Commitment is a minimum of 2 weeks (with flexibility throughout the
summer) and one day of training prior to camp.  There are both
morning shifts and afternoon shifts available.  Some stipend payments
to outstanding Apprentices may be awarded.  For more information call

BACKSTAGE is an apprentice/counselor-in-training program for
teenagers in 9th through 12th grade. Each counselor/apprentice will
be asked to select a specific focus, such as choreography, stage and
set design, music, costuming, stage management or direction. Students
will assist with our programs, and receive direct "behind-the-scenes"
experience in both theater and the day-to-day aspects of camp life.
Each apprentice is scheduled for two to nine weeks of service, and
receives a small stipend. He or she will be actively engaged in our
production, and gain pre-vocational training in their area of focus.
Apprentices are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 daily, and must
undergo a separate application process, including an interview. Call
