Below is important information for incoming Berkeley High freshmen
(current 8th graders) from private schools or schools outside of the
Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) -- Class of 2010...  

[Please note that while ALL 8th grade families should attend
Information Night on Wednesday, March 1, students currently enrolled
in Longfellow, King or Willard DO NOT need to enroll their child in
the BUSD--they are already enrolled.  A separate etree message has
been sent with dates and information for students at BUSD middle
schools.]

1. 
Information Night for the Class of 2010
Wednesday, March 1, 2006
7:00-9:00 p.m. (Arrive early to secure parking)
BHS Community Theater, 1980 Allston Way (at Milvia)

This is an important informational evening presenting an overview of
the many excellent school and program choices BHS is offering in
2006.  This is an opportunity for prospective 9th grade students and
their families to hear from administrators, counselors, department
heads, teachers, and students about Small Schools, small learning
communities, academic and elective departments, activities, clubs and
athletics.   Please arrive early in order to secure parking.  The
presentation will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.

Enrollment in the Berkeley Unified School District for the 2006-2007
school year. Students currently attending 8th grade in private
schools (or outside of the district) must enroll in the BUSD before
completing their Program/Course Selection for Fall, 2006.
Enrollment in BUSD begins Friday, March 17th.  To enroll, please
follow the instructions in step 5, below. 

3. 
Registration at Berkeley High School.  Students who have completed
enrollment in the BUSD must then register at Berkeley High School.
BHS registration starts Tuesday, March 21.  To register, please
follow the instructions in step 6 of this message. 

4. 
New BUSD/BHS students complete their Program/Course Selection
Tuesday, March 28, (last names starting with A-L) or Tuesday, April
4, (last names starting with M-Z)  The meetings will start promptly
at 7:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. in the BHS Library at 1980 Allston
Way.  We recommended that you arrive at BHS no later than 6:30 in
order to secure parking.  Students should be accompanied by a
parent/guardian.  Counselors will present detailed information,
answer questions, and assist students with completing their
program/course selection forms for the 2006 - 2007 school year.  It
is required that you bring a copy of your student's most recent
report card and any written teacher recommendations regarding his/her
competency in math and foreign language to this meeting. These must
be turned in with their program/course selection documents at the end
of the meeting.

It is imperative that students complete enrollment (steps 2 & 3
above) before their Program/Course Selection Meeting (step 4).

All of these events will give us the opportunity to get your student
off to a good start in high school.  We look forward to meeting and
working with you and your student to make his/her Berkeley High
Schools experience meaningful and rewarding.

Enrollment Dates and Instructions for Berkeley High Schools Class of
2010 Coming from Non-BUSD Schools (Students enrolled in King,
Longfellow and Willard do not have to enroll in the BUSD--They are
already enrolled.)  

ENROLL: Starting March 17th parents must first enroll students at the
BUSD Admissions Office located at 1835 Allston Way (644-6504) in the
BUSD Annex building.   The Admissions office is open for enrollment
Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., (closed 12 p.m. to 1
p.m.)  Parents must bring the student's BIRTH CERTIFICATE and THREE
PROOFS OF BERKELEY RESIDENCY.  

Proof of Berkeley residence - any THREE from the following list of
CURRENT documentation, including at least one from category "d" that
is imprinted with the name and Berkeley address of the
parent/guardian, will be required to establish proof of residency:

A) California Driver's License or ID

B) Current bank statement

C) Action letter from Social Services, a letter from the State Office
for Medi-Cal, a letter from the employer on company letterhead, or a
paycheck stub

D) PG&E bill, phone bill (non-cellular), EBMUD bill, garbage bill or
cable bill

Please note: It takes two business days for the Admissions Office to
complete your enrollment and give you the registration packet for
BHS.

6. 
REGISTER: After receiving a school assignment/registration packet
from the Admissions Office, parents must then register their student
at Berkeley High School. 

It is necessary to bring your student's (1) immunization record,(2)
birth certificate and (3) an unofficial copy of their school
transcript from the preceding school as well as the completed
registration packet to register at BHS. We realize that the final
semester of 8th grade will not be included.  We suggest that you
request 2 copies of your student's transcript from their current
school immediately after first semester grades are issued since it
usually takes a few days for schools to prepare copies of
transcripts.

Registration at BHS will take place on the following dates and times:

A - D: Tuesday, March 21         9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Closed 12 to
1:30
E - H: Wednesday, March 22       9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Closed 12 to
1:30
I - M: Thursday, March 23        9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Closed 12 to
1:30
N - R: Friday, March 24          9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Closed 12 to
1:30
S - Z:  Monday, March 27         9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Closed 12 to
1:30

Berkeley High Registration will take place in the BHS Administration
Office, located at 1980 Allston Way (corner of Allston Way and
Milvia).
