SAT WORD OF THE DAY:    TRITE - dull; unoriginal; overused;
hackneyed.  Many expressions now considered trite, such as "look
before you leap," were originally coined by Benjamin Franklin.   

The next senior parent's College Night will be held on Tuesday,
October 25 at 6:30 in the BHS library.  Speakers include the new
director of admissions at UC Berkeley and representatives from the
California State University system, a private university and
community colleges.  I look forward to seeing you all!  

Other upcoming events for senior parents are:  A two-part financial
aid workshop - November 10 and December 6, both at 6:30 in the BHS
library.  

* PSAT - Those of you who signed up for the PSAT this Saturday,
report to the garden area between the Donahue Gym and the C building
at 8:30 a.m. Bring a photo ID, several number 2 pencils and a
calculator for the math sections of the test. You should be dismissed
before 11:30 a.m. Please come on time.

COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVE VISITS.  The October list is available in
D221.  Sign up to get more information on colleges from around the
country.  You must have your teacher's signed authorization to attend

Do you need some help with your college application essay?  Starting
this week, with one or two exceptions, essay readers will be
available before school on Monday and Tuesday; lunch every day, and
after school every day except Thursday and Friday.

FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
SAT/ACT TEST DATES - October 28 is the regular registration deadline
for the December 3 SAT and SAT subject tests. November 4 is the
regular registration for the December 10 ACT.  These are the last
tests recommended for the UC and Cal State campuses, as well as many
private schools.

FOR ALL STUDENTS
HIGH SCHOOL STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS AND STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES
- The World Affairs Council and the Youth For Understanding USA
offers scholarships to Northern California high school students to
study abroad for a summer, semester or year.  Applications for both
the scholarship and study abroad program are available in the
College/Career Center and at www.itsyourworld.org/schools or at
www.yfu-usa.org.  Recommendations are required.  Postmark deadline:
December 13.  

Mentoring for Academic Success - free tutoring by UC Berkeley tutors
in D221 every Monday and Wednesday from 3:15 to 5:15.  For more
