At the Sep. 8 PTSA meeting parents or community members will be
elected to four seats on the School Site Council (SSC) and five seats
on the Berkeley Schools Excellence Project (BSEP) site committee.
Those interested in running should submit their names, along a
candidate's statement of no more than 200 words, to BHS Volunteer
Coordinator Janet Huseby at jhuseby at pacbell.net . Be sure to include
your name, the name of your BHS student(s), your phone number, which
committee you want to run for and the (optional) candidate's
statement. If you know someone who would like to run but does not use
email they can deliver or mail the same information to Janet in care
of the BHS office. The mailing address is 2223 Martin Luther King Jr.
Way, Berkeley, CA 94704.

To be on the ballot persons must submit their name to the Volunteer
Coordinator by Wednesday, Aug. 31. Candidates' names will be
published on the BHS etree on Sep. 1 and their statements posted to
the PTSA website on that date or as soon thereafter as possible.
Persons who do not declare their candidacy by Aug. 31 may run as
write-in candidates if they appear in person at the election.

People can find more information about these powerful committees in
the Summer 2005 BHS Newsletter. If you haven't received a newsletter
or have lost it, you can access the article on the BHS PTSA website
http://berkeleypta.org/. Go to newsletter archives, Summer 2005, page
7. One amendment: it appears that SSC will meet on the fourth Tuesday
(rather than Monday) in the coming year, from 4:30 pm - 6 pm.

If you aren't interested in running yourself, please read the
candidates' statements when posted and come to the Sep 8 meeting to
vote. The membership of these committees can make an important
difference in the direction of Berkeley High.
