*News from the Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG)*
*November 2022*
Today is Giving Tuesday, an annual event to celebrate donor generosity and
spotlight the great work of nonprofit organizations. It's also the kickoff
for the BHSDG year-end fundraising campaign! Please consider a donation
<https://www.bhsdg.com/donate> to support vital programs and services that
serve ALL students at Berkeley High School, Berkeley Technology Academy,
and Berkeley Independent Studies (9-12).
Read on for recent grant highlights and to find out more about the
essential programs that your donations to BHSDG have funded this school
year, as well as the many ways you can get involved and invest in
strengthening our school.
*WHAT HAVE YOUR DONATIONS FUNDED RECENTLY?*
Your contributions to BHSDG fund after-school tutoring, classroom supplies,
software, teacher professional development, technology, college-application
support, and many other programs. Without your donations, the BHS
experience would simply not be the same. Highlights of recent grants
include:
*Data Science Chrome Cart and Updated Macs for Computer Lab ($22,783). *This
grant provides funds to purchase one 36-computer Chrome cart to be used in
the new Introduction to Data Science course. This new offering is already
proving to be popular and more than 100 students are currently enrolled.
Your donations are also helping to purchase four new Macs for the Computer
Lab to provide students with access to the latest versions of Adobe
Creative Suite design and desktop publishing software.
*AP and IB Testing Fees + College Application Fees ($23,500)*. BHSDG funds
will support discounts for Advanced Placement (AP) and International
Baccalaureate (IB) tests and reduce college application fees for students
in need. Last year your donations helped more than 150 students offset
these expenses.
*FOCUS: Fun-filled Opportunities for Career Exploration and Unconditional
Support ($7,500).* Your generosity will support field trips focused on
college and career exploration for at-risk students. Intervention
counselors will lead students on at least 6 field trips this year with a
goal of building relationships with students and exposing them to
opportunities beyond Berkeley High School. Funding for field trips
even before the pandemic was limited, and the students served by this grant
are most in need of opportunities to learn about and prepare for life after
graduation.
*Homecoming 2022 ($3000).* The Homecoming Dance returned to Berkeley High
School after a 12 year absence! This grant paid for photo booths and
reduced ticket fees for students in need. The dance was sold out and more
than 400 students were able to participate in this fun and enjoyable
community-building event.
*2022-23 Berkeley High School Musical ($3,850).* BHSDG funds will support
expenses for the production of this year's school musical in January 2023.
Due to the pandemic school closures this program has been shuttered for
almost three years. This grant will make it possible to students to plan
and present a musical, including set, sound, and lighting design, stage
management, and orchestra accompaniment. Students are currently planning
six performances.
*Physics Club Rocketry Project ($2080). *This grant will provide students
in the Physics Club the materials to build a sugar-fuel combustion engine
rocket, including design, prototype, testing, and final launch. The final
launch will be done in coordination with the Universal 9th grade Physics
classes so that all 9th graders have an opportunity to see physics in
action.
*Berkeley Independent Studies (BIS) Garden Upgrade ($2,430).* The BIS
Garden, located on the Berkeley Technology Academy (B-Tech) campus, is
accessible to the more than 200 students attending B-Tech and BIS each year
and is maintained by 20 current BIS students. During the pandemic school
closure regular garden maintenance was suspended and there are repairs and
improvements needed now. This grant will pay for general maintenance,
irrigation system repairs, garden art and new seating, a medicinal herb
garden, and more.
