[BHS Etree] ADMIN: BHS Bell Schedule Redesign Update

Dear BHS Students and Families,

The BHS Bell Schedule Redesign Committee (composed of six teachers, two
counselors, and one administrator) has been working to gather robust input
from stakeholders to inform a possible bell schedule redesign. We have held
parent town halls and student fishbowls, launched surveys for staff, and
are preparing multiple additional avenues for stakeholders to have input
including parent and student surveys, additional family town halls,
listening sessions, and discussion workshops.

to inform the community that we are revising the timeline for our work as
presented to the Board last October, in order to achieve our goal of
improving the way we use instructional time at BHS to educate and inspire
all students while working through the continued strains of our pandemic,

We are not pausing or slowing down. Instead, we are giving the families,
students, and staff more time and opportunity to weigh-in on the redesign
process, and we are building a comprehensive plan for improving the way we
use time through our bell schedule.

The timeline for the bell schedule redesign is now extended over two years.

Additionally, we are working closely with BUSD and Berkeley Federation of
Teachers leadership (our Teachers Union) to implement changes required by
state law for the 2022-23 school year. These changes include a first period
start time no earlier than 8:30am (required by CA Senate Bill 328
<https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB328>
).

The committee is working towards proposing a bell schedule redesign in the
fall semester of 2022 that would go into effect for the 2023-24 school
year. The committee is gathering information from students, families, and
staff via surveys, town halls, and listening sessions to inform the
proposal that could include, but not be limited to: a block schedule,
modified block, term schedule (4x4), advisory, flex period, or other uses
of instructional minutes. Any proposed redesign to our current bell
schedule is driven by our desire to ensure that we are supporting all
students at BHS.

Adicionalmente, estamos trabajando en estrecha colaboración con el
liderazgo de BUSD y la Federación de Maestros de Berkeley (nuestro
Sindicato de Maestros) para implementar los cambios requeridos por la ley
estatal para el año escolar 2022-23. Estos cambios incluyen una hora de
inicio del primer período no antes de las 8:30 am (requerido por el
Proyecto de Ley 328 del Senado de CA

).
