[BHS Etree] BHS ADMIN: AB-104 - Grade Change and Retention Options

Hello BHS Students and Families,

On July 1, 2021, Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 104 (AB-104)
<https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB104>
into law. AB-104 provides learning recovery options for students who
struggled with low grades as a result of distance learning during the
pandemic.

There are two main provisions of the law that families may consider:

Provision #1: Letter Grade to Pass or No Pass Change Option

One provision allows students enrolled in a Berkeley High School course
during the 2020-21 school year to select to replace a letter grade with a
Pass or No Pass designation with no negative impact on their GPA.

Any grade from an A through a D can be changed to a “Pass.”

Students with an F grade can select a “No Pass” (and will still not receive
the course units) and will receive an additional communication from their
school regarding remediating the course(s).

The process of changing a grade requires that students complete the
following Grade Change Application

California Department of Education (CDE) website. Students should submit an
individual Application for Fall semester, Spring semester, and summer, as
applicable, and they should indicate the Grade Level they were in during
the 2020-21 school year. Completed Applications must be signed by a
parent/guardian and should be emailed to bhsab104 at berkeley.net.

It is important for students and families to know that some postsecondary
educational institutions, including those in other states, may not accept a
Pass or No Pass grade instead of a letter grade for admission purposes. The
California Department of Education website will list institutions that will
accept Pass or No Pass grades in their admissions process.

***The Pass/No Pass designation option is only available to BHS students
for fifteen (15) calendar days following the date of this notification
(deadline to submit Grade Change Applications is Friday, August 13, 2021).

Provision #2: Grade Retention Option

Another provision of the AB-104 allows parents of children with mostly
failing grades (50% or greater) to request that their student be retained
to repeat the grade level in which they were enrolled for the 2020-2021
school year (Kindergarten - 11th grade). If you wish to select this option
for your student, written requests should be submitted to Mr. Juan Raygoza,
BHS Principal, in writing at juanraygoza at berkeley.net.
