[BHS Etree] BUSD: Update on Covid Positive Cases

Hello BHS Families,

We want to share with you the message that BUSD sent out regarding several
Covid positive cases in case you did not receive it.

Three individuals who participated in the Berkeley High School boys
basketball program last week have tested positive for COVID-19. The
District became aware of the first positive individual on Friday, April 16
and followed all notification protocols, including doing contact tracing
with the individual, placing all individuals present at practices last week
on a ten-day quarantine, notifying City of Berkeley Public Health, posting
the case on the District's Confirmed On-Site COVID-19 Case Dashboard
<https://www.berkeleyschools.net/coronavirus/case-dashboard/>, and
notifying the school community. On Sunday, April 18, we learned of a second
individual who tested positive and was also present at BHS boys basketball,
and on Monday, April 19, we learned of a third. We are following the same
COVID-19 Case protocols in all instances.

Additionally, a positive case was reported for an individual at Sylvia
Mendez Elementary School on Friday, April 16, and a positive case was
reported for an individual at Rosa Parks Elementary School on Monday, April
19. Case reporting protocols were followed in both instances, and each of
these positive cases has resulted in quarantines. These five cases serve as
an important reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over.

We confirmed today that masks were not worn by most students as they
engaged in rigorous basketball drills at two outdoor practices and one
indoor workout last week. We have also learned about non-BHS workouts that
involved some BHS basketball players at an indoor gym without masks over
the preceding week. What happened during the basketball tryouts is not in
keeping with the guidance from our Athletic Directors, who follow the
guidance from both the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and
California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), including that face coverings
are to be “worn by participants during practice, conditioning and during
competition, even during heavy exertion as tolerated.”

We are pausing all athletics tryouts at BHS for at least 48 hours from
Monday evening, in order to conduct a thorough review of athletic practices
for adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols, under the direction of the City
of Berkeley Health Department. This pause includes all indoor and outdoor
sports tryouts. These include badminton, soccer, lacrosse, water polo,
basketball, wrestling, and volleyball.

Our BHS students have been engaged in athletics since conditioning began
this past summer, and have competed in outdoor swimming, golf, tennis,
cross country, track, lacrosse, baseball, softball, and football. This is
the first report of multiple cases in association with a BHS athletic
team.

BUSD COVID-19 Student Testing

We are now offering free student COVID-19 testing through PMH Laboratory
Inc. <https://pmhlaboratory.com/about/pmh-laboratory> at all BUSD pre-K
through high school campuses. We encourage all families to consider having
their students participate. Testing is one of several important risk
mitigation measures in place on our campuses.

Nurses roll carts to classroom doors or outside locations and samples are
collected with a simple mouth swab test that takes less than a minute.
Parents and guardians will be notified of results within 72 hours. In the
event of a positive test result, a District Nurse will immediately reach
out to families with important covid-19 health information.

Principals will reach out with student testing information for your school.

Tres personas que participaron en el programa de baloncesto masculino de
Berkeley High School la semana pasada dieron positivo en COVID-19. El
Distrito se enteró del primer individuo positivo el viernes 16 de abril y
siguió todos los protocolos de notificación, incluido el rastreo de
contactos con el individuo, colocando a todos los individuos presentes en
las prácticas la semana pasada en una cuarentena de diez días, notificando
a Salud Pública de la Ciudad de Berkeley, publicar el caso en el Panel de

BUSD COVID-19 Pruebas para Estudiantes

Ahora estamos ofreciendo pruebas gratuitas COVID-19 para los estudiantes a
