Your Donations at Work:
News from the Berkeley High School Development Group
September 2020
Your donations to Berkeley High are already hard at work in the new school
year. Read on to learn more about the vital programs that donations to the
Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG) have funded, as well as the
many ways you can invest in strengthening our school.
WHAT IS BHSDG?
We are an all-volunteer, nonprofit foundation made up of parents and
students whose mission is to strengthen the educational experience of every
Berkeley High School student. In the 2019-2020 school year, we awarded
$312,000 in grants, and we managed an additional $182,000 of donations and
other revenue earmarked for specific learning communities, programs, and
departments.
HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT DISTANCE LEARNING?
The 2020-2021 school year brings unprecedented challenges, and the Berkeley
High School Development Group is committed to working in partnership with
the district, schools, and community to help provide a rigorous, equitable,
supportive, and engaging academic experience for all students.
Our ability to fund essential programs, materials, and training depends on
your contributions. Every contribution makes a difference. Please consider
making a donation today. Donate online at http://bhsdg.org/wp/give/
WHAT HAVE YOUR DONATIONS FUNDED RECENTLY?
Your giving to BHSDG funds distance-learning software, computers, classroom
supplies, after-school tutoring, college-application support, and many
other activities. Without your donations, the BHS experience would simply
not be the same—especially in these times of budget cuts. Highlights of
grants funded at our meetings in August and September include these
programs benefiting students:
After-School Tutoring ($60,000). Your donations enable all students to
receive free tutoring from BHS teachers during distance learning. In
addition to core subject areas, distance-learning technology support is a
new part of the offering this year. Check out the latest tutoring schedule

Technology Hardware, Software, and Professional Development ($30,000).
BHSDG approved a $18,000 grant to fund teacher home-technology purchases
for distance learning, such as web and document cameras. A $12,000 grant is
already boosting the quality and interactivity of distance learning, as
well as providing support, best practices, and a learning community for
teachers. More than 60 teachers have been trained in using Padlet,
Edpuzzle, and other important elements of BHS’ distance learning framework.
“BHSDG has always been an important partner for Berkeley High’s technology
needs, which tend to be underfunded by the school district,” says Matt
Albinson, an ed-tech specialist at Berkeley High. “In the time of distance
learning, BHSDG has stepped up to provide crucial support when it has been
needed the most.”
Online Science Labs ($9,000). This grant enables teachers to deliver
interactive science labs through distance-learning software that includes
Gizmos, Chem 101, and Pivot. The software brings advanced concepts to life
in classes ranging from U9 Physics to AP-level science courses.
Classroom Supplies ($45,000). All classroom teachers at Berkeley High
School, Berkeley Technology Academy, and Berkeley Independent Study are
eligible to be reimbursed for up to $300 they spend on supplies for
students in their classrooms. These expenses are expected to increase with
distance learning.
School Planners ($12,000). Planners are available for students at BHS
during textbook pickup times. The planner is packed with important dates
and engaging student artwork to help with time management and organization.
College Application and Testing Fee Support ($12,000). Your donations will
cover application and testing fees for low-income students when they apply
to college. "The money donated to Berkeley High's College and Career Center
has allowed me the opportunity to apply to top universities," said student Ryan
Walton, class of 2019. "This has given me the chance to be admitted into
amazing institutions that I otherwise would not have had the chance to
attend."
