News from the Berkeley High School Development Group
February 2020

Read on to learn more about fundraising activities this month from the
Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG), as well as details of vital
programs that your donations have funded and the many ways you can invest
in strengthening our school.

Fundraising Updates

Friends of Berkeley High Luncheon: This year's annual luncheon will be held
at noon on Tuesday, March 24, at Revival Bar + Kitchen in Berkeley. Tickets
are available at http://bhsdg.org/wp/lunch/. The featured speaker will be
BHS parent and UC Berkeley Professor Jennifer Doudna, co-discover of the
breakthrough CRISPR-cas9 gene-editing method and one of Time magazine's
most influential people. She will be joined in conversation by superstar
BHS Biology teacher Glenn Wolkenfeld, discussing how to blaze paths for
women and minorities in science. Special thanks to North Berkeley
Investment Partners for being our first sponsor. Do you know a local

Open board positions: Looking for a way to get more involved with Berkeley
High? Join the BHSDG Board! We are specifically looking to fill a treasurer
and database manager positions for 2020-2021. Come to our next meeting at
7-9 pm on Monday, March 2, in the College and Career Center to learn more,
or contact Co-president Jessica Hilton at info at bhsdg.org.

What Have Donations Funded Recently?

Highlights of grants funded at our February board meeting include these
programs benefiting students:

CAS to Cuba ($4,120). Two scholarships for students to learn about the
history, culture, politics, and people of Cuba. CAS students will share
what they have learned through videos, class presentations, and teach-ins
to their classmates.

National Society of Black Engineers Conference ($3,000). Partial funding
for eight promising students to attend the national conference in Texas and
have the opportunity to explore STEM careers.


Black Psychology ($1,250). Guest speaker for the African American Studies
Black Psychology class to share healing and wellness practices that
students can incorporate into their lives.

How You Can Help

Donate. Donate online at www.bhsdg.org, or via check payable to BHSDG, P.O.
Box 519, Berkeley, CA 94701-0519. Please inquire if your employer has a
matching gift program that could double your donation. You can also donate
stock by contacting stock at bhsdg.org.

Shop with eScrip. Register your credit, debit, and store club and loyalty
cards at www.escrip.com and earn money for Berkeley High. It's free to
enroll, and your purchases benefit the Berkeley Athletic Fund and BHSDG.

Shop with AmazonSmile. When you remember to shop on Amazon at
smile.amazon.com, a portion of your order can go to BHSDG. Just choose

About BHSDG
We are an all-volunteer, nonprofit foundation made up of parents and
students whose mission is to strengthen the educational experience of every
Berkeley High School student. In the 2018-2019 school year, we directly
funded $352,000 in grants, and we managed an additional $261,000 of
donations and other revenue earmarked for specific learning communities,
programs, and departments.

BHSDG is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations
to BHSDG are tax deductible. We generally meet on the first Monday of each
month from September through June, except for holidays and school
breaks. The next board meeting will be 7-9 pm on Monday, March 2, in the
College and Career Center. Visitors and those interested in becoming
members are welcome!
