*BHSDG APRIL NEWS AND UPDATES*

*Partners’ Lunch:* If you were able to attend the Partners’ Lunch in March,
thank you so much for coming! And many, many thanks to “Lil’ Woke” a.k.a.
Michael Lewis, who is just as funny and engaging a story teller in person
as he is on the page or the radio. (Maybe your kid has also told you that
you aren’t woke enough? Hey, we’re trying - we’re maybe a little-bitty-bit
woke.) Thanks to all the generous ticket purchases, donations, and
sponsorships, we were able to bring in over $50,000. Which is fantastic,
because it’s:

*First Step Scholarship Application Time!* BHSDG has once again allocated
money to give students in need, who have been admitted to a four year
college (2 year for Dreamers), some help in taking that first step on the
path to actually getting there. Your generous donations have already been
hard at work paying for testing fees (AP, SAT, ACT, etc.) and college
application fees for these students. Now, a bunch of them have gotten the
good news that they’re admitted. But - will they have enough to get
there? For a key deposit for the room? A laptop? Airfare to get to the
place that gave them a full-ride scholarship? A suitcase? Those are the
kinds of things First Step can pay for. Any senior whose “EFC” (expected
family contribution) is $1,000 or below should talk to their guidance
counselor or visit the College Career Center for an application. *The
completed application is due in the CCC by 5/10 at 3 p.m.*

*Good Eggs Fundraiser:* Is still happening! Through the end of April, Good
Eggs online grocery store will donate 5% of your order back to BHSDG. If
you are a new customer they will also take $15 off your first order. (If
20 new customers sign up, they’ll donate an additional $500 to us.)
Delivery free on orders $60 or more. *Order here: *
*http://schools.goodeggs.com/* <http://schools.goodeggs.com/>* and use
BHSDG19 as your school code.* Positive reports from BHS parents who
shopped with Good Eggs have included remarks like “super convenient windows
on delivery and high-quality products” and “I really appreciate the
reusable packaging - they took back the ice packs and delivery box on the
spot!”

*HIGHLIGHTS OF GRANTS APPROVED IN March and April:* For the months of March
and April, the Development Group allocated over *$42,604.66 ($36,8759 -
March; $5,845.66 - April)* in grants. Highlights include:

*School-wide Spring Carnival: $4,500*

again! Sooooo many fun things for our students to do with their friends
(and healthy, respectful and appropriate, too!) Organized by Mr. V and
student leadership. *New this year: A petting zoo!*

Spring installment of funds to pay teachers to stay after school to offer
extra help to all students in multiple subjects.

*Who and What is Berkeley High School Development Group?* The BHSDG is a
group of parent and student volunteers; our mission is to strengthen the
educational experience of every Berkeley High School student. We strive
for equity. We fund grants which benefit our school community and raise
the funds to support this work. We meet on the first Monday of each month
(rescheduled as needed to accommodate holidays and school breaks) from
September through June, consider grant proposals and work on ways to raise
the funds to support them. We are a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization; all donations to the BHSDG are tax deductible. *Our next
board meeting will be: Monday, May 6th from 7:00-9:00 in the College Career
Center. Visitors and new members are welcome!*

In a typical year, BHSDG receives around $500,000 in donations; $250K in
gifts to the general fund, and $250K in “restricted” funds (gifts
specifically designated for a learning community or program - like AC,
BIHS, Science, Universal 9th Grade, Band and Orchestra, e.g.). Most of our
donations come from BHS community members - like you!

The Development Group accepts grant proposals from all Berkeley High School
(BHS), Berkeley Technology Academy (BTA), and Independent Studies (IS)
teachers, students, and staff on a monthly basis. (Deadline: 15th of each
month for consideration at the next Board meeting.) *Students and Staff -
if you have a great idea, submit a grant proposal!*
