Berkeley High School Development Group May News
Update on Challenge Grant: To those of you who have donated to BHSDG - thank you! As you may know, an anonymous group of generous donors have offered a matching grant of up to $15,000, and so far we’ve raised $11,000! Please help us reach our goal by donating before May 15th: http://bhsdg.org/wp/give/ - don’t let that match get away! (n.b.You may designate your donation to a program, but the match will go to the general fund.)
Business Partners and Friends Luncheon: Many thanks to all of you who came to our lunch with guest speaker Daveed Diggs, to those who volunteered for the event, to those of you who volunteered at the all-school assembly with Daveed, or donated even more to help pay for grants. It was quite amazing; Daveed was as gracious and inspiring as we could ever have dreamed …… and we raised almost $50,000, which is a tremendous help to us in giving support to improve and enrich the educational experiences of all of our students.
First Step Scholarships: As we’re sure you are aware, paying for college has become a major challenge for our students. For several years, BHSDG has given small scholarships to low-income seniors at BHS/BTA who have enrolled in a four year college (for Dreamers, a two year college qualifies.) This year, we received 74 applications from students whose expected family contribution on the FAFSA is $2,000 or less. At our Board meeting on Monday, May 7th, we voted to allocate enough funds to give each of those students a $750 scholarship. We will present the scholarships to awardees at the BHS awards ceremony on May 23rd - join us in celebrating their accomplishments!
Spring Carnival: This month, Mr. V, head of student leadership programs at BHS, told us what he and the student leadership team had been dreaming up: an all-school carnival, with games, and food trucks, and all kinds of fun, to promote student unity and positivity. We granted $5650 to pay for things like inflatable obstacle courses and other activities….. Stay tuned for announcements seeking parent volunteers to help out with the event!
NEWLY APPROVED GRANTS:
Recent grants approved by our all-volunteer Board include:
First Step Scholarships: 74 scholarships at $750 - $55,500
Paper and Ink for Student Science Symposium Posters - $1560
Supplies for a Student Film Production: $151
Games for School-Wide Carnival: $5650
GRANT PROPOSALS: The Development Group accepts grant proposals from all Berkeley High School (BHS), Berkeley Technology Academy (BTA), and Independent Studies (IS) teachers, students, and staff on a monthly basis. (Deadline: 15th of each month for consideration at the next Board meeting.) Students and Staff - if you have a great idea, submit a grant proposal! June 4th is our last meeting of the year; please give us your grant proposal by May 15.
The Berkeley High School Development Group is a group of parent and student volunteers; our mission is to strengthen the educational experience of every Berkeley High School student. We meet on the first Monday of each month (rescheduled as needed to accommodate holidays and school breaks) from September through June, consider grant proposals and work on ways to raise the funds to support them. Visitors and new members are welcome! Our next board meeting will be: Monday, June 4th from 6:30-9:00 in the College Career Center; we will be voting in new board members.
