*Student Leadership Opportunities for 2018-2019*

Hello, Classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021! We are building up our student
leadership team for next school year and would love for every part of this
school to be represented, from student athletes, to representatives from
each small school, to those who have never been in "leadership" before.
YOUR VOICE IS POWERFUL! JOIN LEADERSHIP!!! You can do so in two ways:

1. Be a mentor and support the incoming 9th grade Class of 2022. JOIN
LINK CREW. The application deadline is APRIL 30.

2. Be a club leader and lead a new/continuing student club. 2018-19
Student clubs can begin completing paperwork now. The application deadline
is JUNE 15.

Forms for each of these opportunities are available in the Leadership
Office near the Food Court.

*Announcements from the College & Career Center*

This Saturday, April 28, BHS students can choose from three great events
that focus on college & career readiness:

   1. From 10:30 am until 2:00 pm, the YMCA Teen Center (at the corner of
Martin Luther King Way and Center St) is hosting a workshop called *Plan
Your Next Move*. If you’re not sure about how to plan your career after
high school, this event will help you explore career options that fit your
interests; listen to speakers who will describe career options within their
fields; understand ways to afford college by understanding cost of
attendance and financial aid options; and get a head start on building your
professional profile by getting a professional photo taken for your
LinkedIn profile. Food will be provided. To attend, reserve your spot at
career.yscholars.org and for questions, contact Elaine at
   echan at yscholars.org.
   2. On Saturday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, there will be a free SAT
Test Prep class organized by PTPS (People's Test Preparation Services) at
UC Berkeley. For more information and to register, visit
   ptps.berkeley.edu.
   3. Also from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm on Saturday is the CTE (Career and
Technical Education) Open House at Laney College in Oakland. Everyone is
invited to learn more about CTE programs at Laney, including building
trades, arts, sciences, culinary and cosmetology. Programs will have their
classrooms and labs open to the public, running tours, demos and
activities. There will also be an industry panel about jobs and
opportunities, raffles, free lunch (while supplies last), and snacks from
the culinary arts department. This is a free event, but everyone does need
to register at bit.ly/cteopenhouse2018. Laney College is right across
the street from the Lake Merritt BART Station.

*Safety Reminders from the BHS Admin & Safety Teams*

As we continue to prioritize safety on campus, we have a few reminders to
share with everyone:

We applaud students and staff who travel to and from school on their bikes
and skateboards; you are helping to reduce auto emissions at BHS and in
downtown Berkeley, and you get the benefit of increased physical activity.
But please remember: once you arrive on campus, you must walk your bikes
and carry your skateboards. Repeated violations of these rules by students
could result in a discipline referral.

During instructional time, all entrances to campus will be closed,
including the doors on Martin Luther King, the gate near the M building,
and the A Gate. Students and staff who arrive during instructional time
must check in through the visitors entrance at the corner of Allston &
Milvia, everyone should be prepared to present your student or staff ID
card. Replacement ID cards are available for a fee in the Counseling Center.

Thank you for your cooperation!

*TOMORROW: AP Exam Pre-Administration Meetings*

The next pre-administration meetings for students who have registered for
the May AP exams will be held tomorrow in the Berkeley Community Theater at
3:40 p.m. Students must attend *one* of the two meetings. During the
Pre-Administration meeting, students will receive their AP Student pack
with their AP number for 2018, and will fill out information required on
the answer sheet of the first test they will take. Students should bring a
number 2 pencil (NOT mechanical) and a book to use as a writing surface.
Students cannot leave until dismissed, which will be no earlier than 4:45
pm. Please see Ms. Williams in room C-106 at lunch if you have any
questions.

*TOMORROW: Summer Opportunities Fair *

Students: the Summer Opportunities Fair will be held tomorrow, April 25th
during 2nd and 3rd periods, and during the first 20 minutes of lunch, in
the M building gym. There will be more than 30 non-profit organizations,
companies, and schools offering opportunities for students during the
summer. Check to see if your 2nd or 3rd period teacher is taking your
class, or stop by at the beginning of lunch.

*TOMORROW: Advanced Math 2 Info Session*

Are you a 9th grade student enrolled in Math 1 who is interested in taking
*Advanced* Math 2 next year? If so, then you should take the Mathematical
Reasoning and Communication Assessment (MRCA) tomorrow, Wednesday, April 25
in Room H-115. Please arrive by 3:35, and bring a pencil. Interested
students should sign up in advance on the sheet outside room H-113.

*National Day of Silence – Friday, April 27*

On Friday, April 27, we are participating in the national Day of Silence to
stand in solidarity with LGBTQ+ students across the country and here at
Berkeley High who feel silenced at school and at home. We are calling on
all allies to please join us in taking a vow of silence for the entire
school day to show your support for the LGBTQ+ students who are afraid to
speak out when they are wronged, who are afraid to voice their opinions in
class, and the students who are afraid to be themselves. We hope you will
also join us with your classes to attend the Break the Silence panel where
you can hear the experiences of Berkeley High LGBTQ+ students and faculty.
The panel will be tomorrow, Wednesday, April 25th, in the Little Theater
during fifth and sixth periods. These events are sponsored by the BHS
Gender & Sexuality Alliance.

*COMING SOON: African American Dance Program Spring Performance*

The Berkeley High School African American Studies Department presents

“REDEMPTION II - In Control” on Friday, May 18, at 7:00 in the Community
Theater. Audiences are always thrilled by the inspirational, high powered,
nonstop dance performance put on by the Berkeley High School
African/American Dance Program. This performance will weave dance, drama,
spoken word, hip hop, Salsa, African, Haitian, interpretive, and modern
techniques to create a visual tapestry of narratives by the New Generation
and their place in this era of traumatic experiences and change. With
pieces choreographed by both teachers and students, this is certainly not a
performance to miss! Reserved seating is $12, General Admission is $8, and
Students/Seniors/Children are $5. Tickets are on sale online at Brown Paper
Tickets <https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3405245>.
