The PTSA Math Discussion Meeting on April 18 was attended by 45-50 parents,
Vice Principal Felicia Phillips, and math lead teachers Nakia Baird and Dr.
Kate Garfinkle. Parents raised their concerns and teachers described their
challenges.



A meeting summary has been posted to the PTSA Website http://bhs.berkeleypta
.org/  It includes parent questions, teacher responses, and links to
relevant information, including an EdReports review of MVP Common Core
curriculum used at BHS and a math assist website created by BHS Math Parent
Liasion Zeph Landau.



Here are some next steps for parents to consider:



Present, past, and future BHS parents are encouraged to take an anonymous
math survey prepared by Donna Storey; responses will be shared with School
Board members and used by parents to advocate for strengthened math

At this Wednesday's April 25th School Board Meeting, directors will vote on
proposed 1-2 year Universal 9th Grade Math Coordinator administrative
position to be funded by LCAP and other District funds. The Math
Coordinator will work with the U9 Math 1 instructors to help develop high
quality instruction, implement math interventions, evaluate math teachers,
and create a collaborative Professional Learning Community professional
development model that, on a regular basis, has teachers looking at student
data and identifying best practices. BHS parents are encouraged to come to
the School Board Meeting to show support for this position and express
their math concerns.
