Juniors, Class of 2019: Classes, College Visits, Scholarships:


1. Apply for free SAT study class: Due 2/12/18

Eligible Juniors: Apply for a chance to take a free SAT study class at UC Berkeley:

The Black Recruitment and Retention Center at the University of California Berkeley has partnered with Study Smarter Tutoring Company in Oakland California to provide a FULLY Subsidized SAT Course for low income, high performing students from disadvantaged communities.

Prepare concise and thoughtful responses to each question. Top applicants will be selected based on eligibility, completion of the application, and strength of the essays.


ALL Applicants will be REQUIRED to submit a baseline score for a diagnostic test (SAT, ACT or PSAT). Here are your options for doing so:

Option A: Submit pre existing scores

Option B: Take an at-home proctored test. If student is lacking a diagnostic score, they can take practice tests at home and send in their scores. Links to existing practice tests and proctoring guidelines can be found in application.

Option C: On February 18th, we will be hosting a proctored diagnostic SAT for students lacking scores.


Applications are due February 12th at 11:59PM. (Late applications will not be accepted)

2. Black College Expo:

Pre-expo meeting at Berkeley High School in Little Theater on Tuesday, 2/13/18 at 3rd period.

Black College Expo at Oakland Marriott City Center on Saturday, 2/17/18 from 9-3.


Black College Expo will host many Historically Black College & Universities (HBCUs) at the Oakland Marriott City Center on February 17, 2018 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  See the website for details and tickets:

Before the Black College Expo on Saturday, meet some representatives from the Black College Expo in the BHS Little Theater on February 13, 2018 at 3rd period. There will be free passes to the Black College Expo.  Find out more about the expo and how to be ready with transcripts and test scores for on the spot admission. You will need to ask permission from your 3rd period teacher in advance of the assembly and bring a signed pass/form. 3. Find out about University of California, Irvine from Krandalyn Goodman in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at lunch time (11:38 AM-12:18 PM). Bring your lunch right after 3rd period and bring questions you cannot find on the website.

4. California State University, San Luis Obispo (SLO) -Cal Poly  will be in the CCC on March 23, 2018 during lunch. Please arrive promptly after 3rd period. Meet Admissions Officer, Anna Kei Black Hogins, to learn about Cal Poly programs and a fundraising program for college expenses, Raiseme.

5. Students Rising Above Award: Due 3/4/18

Students Rising Above Select Program: Due March 4, 2018

Selection criteria:

- MUST CURRENTLY BE A JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL

- Overcome obstacles that are not of their own making

- Low-income or living on government assistance -- $10K - $12K per person (or lower) as stated on IRS documents

- High school senior in 2018-2019 school year (graduating Spring 2019)

- U.S. citizen, permanent resident, DACA status or Dream Act eligible

- Committed to earning a college degree from a four year institution

- Highly recommended by a teacher, counselor or mentor

- G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher

- Must live within the nine-county Bay Area

- Comply with Students Rising Above program requirements
