Berkeley High School Bulletin for Monday, December 12, 2016

Morning Sports Report
Jacket sports teams were victorious all weekend! Here are some scores from recent games: the boys JV and varsity basketball teams defeated Skyline, the girls varsity basketball team beat Lynwood at the Laney College Shootout, the girls freshman soccer shut out Clayton Valley Charter, and the boys varsity soccer team edged California High School. There are no scheduled competitions today, but our basketball, soccer and wrestling teams will compete later this week.

Reminder from the BHS Safety Team
Here are a few reminders from the safety team: our expectation is that students will leave the Campus Green and M Building areas immediately after 6th period has ended. Students should proceed to Bridge, the CCC, teacher-led tutorials, the library or off campus. We will clear the entire campus at 3:45.

African Haitian Dance Fall Performance
Berkeley High School African American Studies Department presents "The Story of Kumba: The Orphaned Child", a West African legend. Once upon a time, in the kingdom of the great Mali Empire, a man of royalty, who was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Kumba, lost his kind and gentle wife. By African tradition, he remarried and not only gained a wife, but another daughter, Penda, who was quite spoiled and disrespectful. For a while, the new wife was good, but then she began to be very demanding and domineering to her husband and Kumba, but nice to Penda. If this reminds you of the story of Cinderella, you are good.

In this dance/drama, one will be able to see the Haitian dance of the dead, Ms. Betti's Aztec dancers, Sabar dance from Senegal, Macru and Kassa from Guinea, Ms. Carr's modern dance, hip hop, a narration that takes you on the journey of being in the story, and more.

Audiences are thrilled and inspired by these young performers. Come see 250 students in the 2000 seat Berkeley Community Theater.

Supporting Standing Rock
The BHS Green Team wants to remind everyone that the situation at Standing Rock is not over. There is a very real possibility that the pipeline will not be rerouted, so the water protectors intend to continue to protest until an alternative route is found. And they need your help if they are to stay through the winter. You can donate items such as sweaters and sleeping bags. There will be donation boxes in the C Gallery where you can drop off your contributions. For information on how you can contribute in other ways, please see the Green Team senior leaders Renee, Angie or Athena.

Jazz Band Member Receives Recognition
Congratulations to Jasim Perales for being selected to the Grammy Band for the second year in a row! This is a huge accomplishment as the Grammy Band accepts only 25 or so of the very top high school players from around the nation. Jasim will travel to LA for over a week to play at Grammy parties and schmooze with all the beautiful music industry people. Go Jazz Jackets!

BHS Surf Club Fundraiser
On Wednesday, December 14th, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, Berkeley High School's Surf Club is holding a Holiday Party in coordination with Sports Basement Berkeley. Please come to watch a surf-related film, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and purchase holiday presents! All Sports Basement purchases during this event are 20% off, and a portion of the profit will be donated to Surf Club! The money raised will go to renting surfboards and wetsuits for Surf Club members that can't afford them. This is a great opportunity to buy your friends and family presents for the holidays while supporting a Berkeley High Cause!
