Dear Incoming Families,

Please find below info about 1. Math Placement, 2. Language Exams and 3. Concert Band & Orchestra

1. Math Placement
Contact Erin Schweng,erinschweng at berkeley.net<mailto:erinschweng at berkeley.net>

Math placement testing for students interested in placing into Advanced Math 1 will take place in the BHS library for all non-BUSD students on the following two dates:

Tuesday, April 12th, 3 pm or Monday, April 18th, 3 pm

Current BUSD students will take the placement test at their middle schools on April 12th.

Students do not need to bring anything to the test except a pencil; calculators are not allowed. The test will take one hour.

Placement results will be mailed home along with lottery assignments in mid to late May.

2. Language Placement

Contact Cory Hendrickson coryhenrickson at berkeley.net<mailto:coryhenrickson at berkeley.net> or Beatriz Ferrer-Castro beatrizferrercastr at berkeley.net<mailto:beatrizferrercastr at berkeley.net>

If you are NEW to Berkeley Unified School District and want to be in a language class above level 1, you will need to take the language placement exam.

If you are currently enrolled in BUSD and want to SKIP level 2 (3/4), you should also come to take the placement test.

This year the exam will be offered on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10:00 AM-noon. The exam will be given on the second floor of the M building - located off Milvia above Channing. You do not need to sign up ahead of time, just come on time. Some students finish the exam in 45 minutes and others need 90 minutes, so it is difficult to say how long the exam will last.

If you are unable to make this April date, the exam will also be given on Friday, August 19 - same time and place.

3 Concert Band & Orchestra vs. Chamber Orchestra & Winds
Most of our entering 9th graders sign up for the 0º Concert Band or Concert Orchestra. This class has no audition. These musicians perform Band, String Orchestra and full Orchestra material at 4 concerts each year, as well as a chamber music unit. Band also performs at BHS sports events.

If your musician chooses to audition into the 1º Chamber Orchestra or Winds they will need to choose a time listed below. These are the ensembles that compete at festivals, in addition to the performances described above. These classes also have weekly Monday morning sectionals and 4 afternoon sectionals per semester.

Audition Dates & Materials
The audition dates for 2016-17 BHS Band and Orchestra are Wed -Fri, April 27, 28, 29 between 4-6pm. Auditions will be held in A201, on the 2nd floor of the A building on the Berkeley High School Campus. The audition will last about 10 min. Please check the folder below for the required audition excerpts.
