Dear Berkeley High School Parents and Guardians,

All Berkeley Unified School District students in grades 9 through 12 are participating this month in awareness and prevention education concerning sexual harassment, battery, assault and the topic of consent. At Berkeley High School, this instruction will take place during a mini-period on December 15, 2015.

Learning outcomes include:

  *   An age-appropriate definition of sexual harassment, battery, sexual assault and cyber-sexual harassment / "sexting," and examples;
  *   Reporting options, resources for support, and filing a report;
  *   Rights and support for reporters/victims;
  *   Consequences for offenders and
  *   Affirmative Consent Law.

California Education Code Section 48900.2 prohibits sexual harassment. BUSD is ensuring that all students are explicitly taught this information in school.

  * "Sexual" will be explained as actions, words or behaviors that relate to private body parts and/or special feelings about another person.
  * "Harassment" is ongoing, unwanted talk or actions. "Sexual harassment" will be explained as talking, or joking about, or touching, private body parts. It is also gossip, writing (including sending text messages, inappropriate photographs, or posting on social media), pictures, or talk that makes anyone feel uncomfortable about his/her body, friendships or family.

The curriculum can be viewed here<https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1xP8qdbUCbchXHg4DnIrMVkZwB4z4LiBYOzCkwOaZNRc/edit?usp=sharing>. Please contact Principal's Assistant Jana Jandra via email (janajandra at berkeley.net<mailto:janajandra at berkeley.net>) or via phone 510-644-4803<tel:510-644-4803> if you have any questions.

If you would like to opt your student out of the training, a written request from a parent or legal guardian--or from students age 18 or older--can be dropped off at the front desk or sent via email to janajandra at berkeley.net<mailto:janajandra at berkeley.net>. Students who do not participate in the training will report to the library for an alternative assignment on December 15th.

Finally, for a copy of Berkeley's sexual harassment policy (BP 5145.7), please visit the BUSD website here<http://www.berkeleyschools.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/SH-BP-final-4815.pdf?5759fb>.

Thank you, in advance, for your involvement in our school and your student's education.

Regards,

Sam Pasarow
Principal
Berkeley High School
