Dear Parents and Guardians,

We've met with Yearbook staff and are investigating how unedited and
inflammatory language about AMPS appeared in the Yearbook. Staff is
recalling all Yearbooks, replacing the text, and organizing a time to
meet with the AMPS community next week. They are also providing a free
revised Yearbook to each AMPS senior and will take and provide an AMPS
community photo to them.

I appreciate the seriousness with which the Yearbook is approaching this
issue and ask that we reserve judgement about the students and staff who
might have been involved in this, pending further investigation. I also
appreciate the AMPS community and Yearbook's response to this issue and
their willingness to participate in a restorative justice process around
this hurt.

I know Gabe Berent is devastated by the error that has caused pain to so
many and, though nothing can undo what was done, he and his staff are
working very hard on a response and a process that will keep this from
happening in the future. I have to note that, prior to Gabe's work with
the Yearbook, an even more egregious and base level lack of editing
existed. He and his staff have taken every immediate step they can to
mitigate the damage.

My hope is that we can use this moment to motivate us to: 1) Manage the
power of spoken and written public information; 2) Strengthen our
written communication skills; 3) Learn about each others communities so
we can overcome stereotypes and assumptions that tear at the fabric of
the overall Berkeley High community.

We will not be distributing any more Yearbooks until the language is
replaced.

Kristin
