College Information Night for Parents/Guardians of BHS Seniors – the
how-to’s of applying



*Senior Profile:*  This form is a requirement only for students applying to
colleges (or programs) that require a counselor recommendation. (The UCs
and Cal States don’t require recommendations.) The link to complete the
online form was sent to the school email account of all BHS seniors (this
summer). If you did not receive this link, please see your college advisor.
The due date is September 12, 2014.



*College **Advisor’s Class Presentations*:  Throughout September, Ms. Price
and Mr. Barton will be conducting class presentations to cover important
aspects of the college application process. Students will also receive a
folder, complete with important information regarding the fall semester and
the college application process.



*Advising Appointments for Seniors*

Sign-up sheets will soon be available in the College & Career Center,
following the conclusion of the senior class presentation schedule.



Seniors may also drop in any day at lunch or after 6th period without an
appointment to have shorter questions answered.

*COLLEGE ESSAY READERS: *

Starting next Monday morning College Essay "Readers" will be available in
the College Center to work with seniors on their personal statements for
the UCs and the Common App. The readers are professional writers who
volunteer their time in the Center on a first come, first served basis
helping students brainstorm, edit, polish. There will be essay readers
Monday *and *Friday before school; at lunch Monday *though *Friday; and
after school Monday through Thursday. A complete schedule will be posted
along with short bios on the different essay readers. This information will
also be available at the College Career Center desk.



*COLLEGE** VISITS*

Many college representatives visit Berkeley High’s College and Career
Center every year. Seniors may attend up to 10 of these meetings, with the
permission of the teacher whose class you are missing. Sign up in advance
in the College and Career Center and pick up a permission slip for
obtaining teacher permission (permission slips were also delivered to
classrooms). The September list is available at

calendar will be updated regularly. Presentations are added on a daily
basis, so we recommend viewing this calendar at least once per week.

*SAT and ACT registration procedures* - Photos required during
registration!:

To produce an honest and fair test-taking environment for all students and
prevent test-taker impersonation, the College Board (for SAT tests) and the
ACT testing agency (for the ACT) will require enhanced security measures
for all students taking the college entrance tests. Students will be
required to submit a current, recognizable head-and-shoulders photo that
will be printed on the new photo admission ticket. For more information,

*SEPTEMBER FIREFIGHTER CAREER EXPO*

Saturday, September 20, 10:00am- 1:00pm, FCTC Livermore, 526 Commerce Way,

In keeping with its mission to recruit, retain, and promote more women to
the Fire Service, the California Fire Fighter Joint Apprenticeship
Committee (CFFJAC) and its Commission to Recruit Women for the Fire Service
encourages interested middle and high school female students to attend a
September 2014 Firefighter Career Expo. The Expos are free and will be held
on Saturdays at the CFFJAC Firefighter Candidate Testing Centers. In
addition to fire department recruitment information booths, activities
throughout the day include Candidate Physical Ability Tests demonstrations,
“A Day in the Life of a Fire Fighter” video presentations, apparatus
displays, a barbeque, and much more. The Expos are designed to welcome and
encourage students to enter this rewarding profession. Please relay this
information to your middle and high school principals. Organized school
programs are also welcome to participate. Students can preregister and find
