The Berkeley Book of College Essays--third edition--has arrived! The updated book, a collection of over 80 college essays written by Berkeley High School students , will be sold for $15 during registration. Checks should be made out to Berkeley High School Development Group. All proceeds benefit the BHS College and Career Center.

What the back of the book says:
A lively collection of personal essays written by the seniors at Berkeley High School.
Coming from all walks of life and backgrounds, the diverse students write about their
eclectic interests, lifestyles, triumphs, and hardships. Includes:
• essays written by more than 80 successful University of California and other selective
 school applicants,
• a variety of prompts and essay formats,
• an updated “Getting Started” guide for the UC and Common Application essays

“These essays encompass the richness of cultures, achievements, experiences, and points of
view within a remarkable urban high school, and they demonstrate emphatically that there are
many different ways to write a smashingly effective college application essay.”
Bob Laird, former director of undergraduate admission, UC Berkeley,
and author of The Case for Affirmative Action in University Admissions

“This is a useful, provocative, and entertaining new book. It is radically different in wholesome
ways from most of the other ‘How To’ essay books that crowd the bookstore shelves. And it is a
great cultural survey of Berkeley.” Jonathan Reider, director of college counseling at San Francisco University High School and former admissions officer at Stanford University

“My New York City high school students loved how unique these essays were. They were really
honest, and many of the writers used unexpected and even everyday stories to communicate
who they were, instead of traditional essays where students just list their talent and successes.”
Jessica Marchetti, former teacher at Millennium High School in New York City, and now assistant principal at Frank McCourt High School, New York

“A beautiful portrait of a diverse, contentious, and delightful group of young people.
They have inherited a world that is often harsh and cruel, but they have found a way to
redeem themselves and us with their generosity, perseverance, and heart.”
Ilene Abrams, college advisor,Envision Academy of Arts and Technology, Oakland

The third edition was compiled by Janet Huseby with Vicky Elliott and Elaine Ratner; production by BHS parent Evelyn Whitburn. All essays were contributed by Berkeley High students as a gift to the school--copies of the book will be mailed home to third edition contributors, at the end of next week.

The book was funded with a grant from the Berkeley High School Development Group. If you are interested in contributing to the sale of this book as a publicist, please contact Janet Huseby at jan at smuseby.net. We need your help!
