Berkeley High Yellow Jackets v. Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits
Friday, 3/22/13 6:00 pm; Sleep Train Arena Sacramento, CA
"Cinderella" "Underdog" "Rebuilding Year". Berkeley High Girls Basketball
Head Coach Cheryl Draper heard it all season long: "Our expectations are
really high and we had a lot of non-believers that told us this team was
only going to win five games this year. I took it personally and developed
these girls and worked them hard."
For the Berkeley High community we all knew this season was going to be
business as usual, and it was, as the Lady Jackets defeated Oak Ridge High
56-45 this past Saturday to clinch the CIF Northern California title.
Berkeley now advances to the CIF State championship game to take on a
familiar opponent in Long Beach Poly.
Long Beach (29-5) is led by 5-6 sophomore Tania Lamb, who finished with 16
points in their 63-40 victory over Moreno Valley Canyons Springs in the CIF
Southern California championship game. Jada Matthews added 10 for the
Jackrabbits who have gotten the best of the Jackets the last three times
they have faced off for the CIF state crown from 2006-2008.
The Jackets will be ready for the Jackrabbits this time around as Rachel
Howard (SR) has the hot hand, putting up 23 points and 9 boards while
nailing two threes from NBA distance against Oak Ridge. Desire Finnie (JR),
Jaimonie Welch-Coleman (SOPH), Garianna Youngblood (SR), Breona Eskridge
(SR) and the rest of the team are clicking at the right time and are looking
to bring the state title back to Berkeley.
