9/20/12 2:00 pm Update re: BHS Pool

The Berkeley High pool will remain closed today and the home game against Piedmont will be rescheduled - day, time, and location to be announced.

Knorr Systems came to Berkeley High on Wednesday at 3:30 pm and will return on Friday. They have reviewed the chemistry and the recent history of chemical feeds. They noted that power outages over the weekend put our system out of operation resulting in a lack of circulation which can influence water chemistry and shut off chemical feeders. They adjusted the control points based on high data loads, made necessary adjustments to the chemical controllers, and performed maintenance on the chlorine probe. They also performed tests on the incoming water chemistry to see what effect domestic water was having on the pool. Knorr will return tomorrow to reassess the chemistry and make any necessary adjustments.

At Berkeley High's request, the City of Berkeley returned to do an additional water test at 11:00 today. We did so to be sure that the tests we were taking were calibrated with their tests. We also wanted to confirm that the water chemistry was moving toward safe levels. Their results show that we are moving a positive direction, however total chlorine levels are still too high. Our ph is currently at 7.3; it was 7.2 yesterday and 7.1 last Friday. Chlorine levels were above 10 ppm and today they were at 8.1. Though the chlorine level is still too high, we are confident the pool chemistry is coming back into balance. We will continue to check it daily, make necessary adjustments, and will open the pool as soon as we are at normal operating conditions.
