On June 6, 2012, the Berkeley Board of Education voted unanimously to "not
maximize" in FY 2012-13, the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) allowable by
the language of two parcel tax measures. Every year the Board establishes
the effective COLA for the Berkeley Schools Facility Safety and Maintenance
Act of 2000 (Measure BB of 2000) and the Berkeley Public Schools Educational
Excellence Act of 2006 (BSEP) for the upcoming fiscal year.

The allowable COLA for BSEP was 3.24%, and the allowable COLA for Measure BB
was 2.24%.

Board Member Josh Daniels proposed a 3.17% COLA for the Berkeley Public
Schools Educational Excellence Act of 2006 (BSEP) and 0% for the Berkeley
Schools Facility Safety and Maintenance Act of 2000 (Measure BB of 2000),
expressing his desire to send a message to Berkeley taxpayers that the
District is in fact managing these tax dollars responsibly, and wants to
minimize the impact on Berkeley residents wherever possible in these
difficult financial times.
