*FINANCIAL AID:  We hope that the classroom presentations have been helpful
for all seniors preparing to complete the financial aid process.

 

*If you have not yet started this process, you should begin filling out the
FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov <http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/> .  Also, remember that
some colleges require the CSS/Financial Aid Profile.  For information on the

Please view the Cash for College Workshop opportunity below:

 

*         CASH FOR COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP FOR SENIORS AND
PARENTS/GUARDIANS  - Tuesday, January 17, 6:30-9:00 p.m., BHS Library and
College and Career Center.  This is one of your last chances to receive
one-on-one help in filling out your FAFSA.  Trained volunteers will provide
information on filling out the FAFSA and answer all of your questions.
Please save this date and view the steps to be prepared listed below.

*         Steps to be prepared for the Cash for College Workshop:  

1.        Be prepared with student and parent social security numbers.  If
you don't have either, come anyway to find out about scholarship
opportunities.  

2.       Bring your family's most recent Federal tax forms, such as 1040,
W-2, bank statements, etc.  You will not have to reveal this information to
anyone, but you will need it to complete the forms.  If your family's 2011
federal tax returns are not ready yet, bring 2010 tax returns for
estimating.

3.       Submit a Cal Grant GPA Release Form to D217 as soon as possible.
You can obtain a form from the College and Career Center (D221).  The final
deadline is February 10, 2012.

4.       Check college / university websites for special financial aid
deadlines and forms (ie. The CSS Profile).  

 

*	If you have not yet signed up for FAFSA personal identification
numbers (PINs), you and your parents should apply now for FAFSA PIN#s at
www.pin.ed.gov <http://www.pin.ed.gov/> .   Be sure to keep a record of
these numbers.  

 

*	It is important to check the financial aid deadlines of each college
you're applying to.  These deadlines may vary, and can be as early as
December.  The deadline to file the FAFSA to apply for financial aid for all
California community colleges, UC and Cal States campuses is March 2.

 

*         FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP FOR SENIORS AND PARENTS/GUARDIANS
(II)-Wednesday, January 18, 6:00-9:00 pm, BHS Library or College and Career
Center (TBD).  For those unable to attend the January 17th workshop, or
those seeking additional assistance with the FAFSA, BHS College Advisors
(Angela Price and Skyler Barton) will provide hands-on assistance with
filling out your FAFSA.   

UC APPLICANTS:   Right after you submit your application, you should receive
an e-mail confirmation that it has been successfully filed.  Four to five
weeks after applying, you should receive another acknowledgment from the UC
Undergraduate Application Processing Service confirming receipt of your
application.  If you don't receive a notice, please contact the processing
service at ucinfo at ucapplication.net or call (800) 523-2048.  

You should also research the University's scholarship opportunities,
including those associated with individual campuses.  While many
scholarships are automatic and awarded on the basis of information that you
provided in the application for admission, some scholarships require
supplemental applications or other documentation.   For more information,

CSU APPLICANTS:  You should receive acknowledgment of your CSU application
by e-mail fairly quickly.  Each campus will then ask you to create an
account in a second e-mail.  This has to be done for each campus separately.
It is important to check these accounts frequently for updates on your
admission status.  Some CSU's will ask students to forward an official
transcript right away.  It is important that you follow all of the
instructions.   CSU applicants must also send official test scores from
College Board or ACT.  

If accepted to any Cal State University, CSU requires you to take the
English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry-Level Mathematics Test (ELM)
before you enroll.  You are exempt from the EPT (English assessment) if your
SAT Critical Reading score is a 500 or above, if your ACT English score is
22 or above or you have a score of 3, 4 or 5 on either the AP Language and
Composition or the AP Literature and Composition test.  You are exempt from
the ELM (math assessment) test if your SAT math reasoning test score or SAT
Subject Test in Mathematics score is 550 or above, if your ACT Mathematics
Test score is 23 or above or you have a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP
Statistics, AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC exam.  

*The Following CSU's are Still Accepting Applications:   Bakersfield, East
Bay and Channel Islands. 

 

COMMON APPLICATION: 

*         The Common Application deadlines are based on Eastern Time, so
remember that the West Coast deadlines will be at 9:00 p.m., not midnight.  

SENDING SAT AND/OR ACT TEST SCORES:  If you are finished with your testing
and haven't told College Board or ACT to send your test scores to each UC
and CAL State campus, do so now. To send your SAT scores to CAL State use
the code 3594 (CSU Mentor) and you will only have to pay once.  If you have
listed a CSU campus as an ACT score report recipient, you can use the ACT
Scores Manager at www.csumentor.edu to release your score to additional
campuses.  If you said "yes" to having your information shared with all UC
campuses at the time you submitted the first UC application you will only
need to send your SAT and ACT scores to one UC campus, otherwise you have to
send them to each individually.  Before you can use the ACT Scores Manager,
you must first have arranged for your scores to be sent to a CSU campus. SAT
scores need to be sent from www.collegeboard.com and ACT scores are sent
from www.act.org.  Although you report your scores on your applications,
colleges require official scores from the testing agency.

*         Double-check to confirm that you've sent your ACT and SAT to all
of the colleges you applied to. 

 

*         Follow-up to ensure that your applications have been completed,
and frequently check your email account(s) to remain updated with any
requests from colleges.  

 

*Physicians Medical Forum - Doctors On Board Program:  The Doctors On Board
Program is an innovative and exciting opportunity for African American
students who are high school seniors to experience a snapshot of what it
takes to become a physician.  This annual informational and interactive
program takes place on February 18, 2012, at the Oakland Marriott City
Center.  Application deadline is February 3, 2012.  For more information,

Spring Engineering Education Days (SEEDs): The 2012 SEEDs program at Santa
Clara University provides Bay Area high school students with a unique
opportunity to explore engineering topics during April. Selected
participants come to Santa Clara University over the course of three
Saturdays (April 7, 21, 28) and take classes spanning several engineering
fields including: civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, robotic, and
bio-engineering. Classes are presented in a typical university format, with
a mix of lecture and interactive laboratory work.  All sessions will be held
in the engineering facilities on Santa Clara University's campus. There is
no cost to participate in this program outside of transportation to and from
the university.  The Application deadline for the SEEDs Program is February

*PSAT SCORES: Attention Juniors and Sophomores who completed the PSAT/NMSQT
on Saturday, October 15, 2011 - Please view the PSAT score report
distribution schedules below: 

Juniors - If you have not received your scores yet, please come to the
College and Career Center during the lunch period.

Sophomores - PSAT score report distribution:

AC:  Please come pick up your scores in the College and Career Center (D221)
during the lunch period.
AHA / CAS / CPA / Green Academy / BIHS:  You will receive your score report
in one of your classes.

If you took the PSAT but do not receive a score report by the end of the
school day on Tuesday, 1-17, please come to D221 to see Ms. Price or Mr.
Barton. 

 

*The YMCA-PG&E Teen Center and Kaplan Test Prep are offering a FREE two-part
seminar series for all high school students to have an opportunity to
experience a practice ACT/SAT test and learn test-taking strategies.  

Saturday, January 21st (9:00 - 1:30 p.m.):  Practice Test - The ACT/SAT
Combo Practice Test will contain questions from all subjects tested on the
ACT and SAT.  Please bring a calculator and two #2 pencils.

Thursday, February 2nd (7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.):   Results and Strategies
Seminar - Students who take the practice test will receive a detailed
analysis of their performance, helping them determine which test is right
for them and learn exclusive score-raising strategies.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES:

*The Academic Talent Development Group (Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors):
ATDP offers challenging and enriching summer courses for students who are
passionate about and dedicated to learning.  This program is held on the UC

*AFS, the Intercultural Exchange Organization, is accepting applications
right now for summer, semester and a full year study abroad trips for high
school and Gap Year students as well as for local families interested in
hosting a foreign student. Full scholarships are available for selected

*The Arthritis Summer Science Internship Program:  This program places
outstanding high school students in the world renowned Rheumatology and
Immunology Laboratories at Stanford University and the University of

ultimate goal of inspiring them to focus their research potential on

USC Summer Programs (Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors):  Offers students a
preview of "freshman year" through its college immersion program.  Students
explore Los Angeles as a laboratory for recreational and cultural learning
beyond the traditional classroom.  Programs are designed to combine college
level coursework, academic field trips, and structured recreational

Colorado College Summer Session High School Program for Rising Seniors
(current Juniors):  Earn college credit and find out if Colorado College and
the Block Plan are right for you.  In addition to coursework, students will
have a chance to participate in the Summer Outdoor Adventure Program.   You

Berkeley Lab Internships for Precollegiate Scholars - BLIPS (Juniors):
BLIPS is an eight-week internship which provides high school juniors with
the opportunity to work with world class scientists or engineers on projects
related to the laboratory's research programs.  Assignment s cover a wide
range of laboratory tasks and assistance in basic research.  Interns will
receive a stipend of $2,000.  For more information, please go to

Telluride Association Summer Programs (Sophomores & Juniors):  This program
is for academic highly motivated sophomores and juniors who share a passion
for learning.  The program is free and the application for the sophomore
program (TASS) is January 9, 2012 and for the junior program (TASP) January

Stanford Medical Youth Science Summer Program (Sophomores & Juniors):
Five-week summer residential program at Stanford open to economically
disadvantaged and under-represented sophomore and junior high school
students who are interested in science, health and medicine careers and are
going to be the first in their family to attend college.  Applications
available in the College and Career Center (D221) and at

must submit an online application AND a paper application. Applications must
be postmarked by: February 15, 2012.

 

Oxbridge Academic Programs:  Experience the learning environment in Oxford
and Cambridge in England, Barcelona in Spain, Paris and Montpellier in
France, and New York City in the U.S.  They offer over 160 different courses

SCHOLARSHIPS:

For a more extensive list of scholarships go to the BHS College and Career

copy!  Remember to frequently check in at the College and Career Center for
updated information on scholarships.  There will be some scholarships
specifically for BHS students!

 

*Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship (for Seniors):   Come to a meeting on
Thursday, January 19, during the lunch period in the College and Career
Center to find out how to apply for this scholarship.  The Community Fund
provides 4-year scholarships and mentoring support for academically talented
and resilient Berkeley High School students.  Students can sign up in the
College and Career Center (D221)d during the lunch period or after school to
attend the meeting.

 

2012 Ivy and Pearls Foundation Scholarship:  Scholarship applications are
now available for the 2012 Ivy and Pearls Foundation Scholarship, sponsored
by the Rho Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Scholarships will be awarded based on need and academic achievement.
Eligible recipients must be a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, be
African/African American, be a high school senior, have a cumulative GPA of
2.5 or above, be enrolled as a full-time student in a two or four-year
college in Fall 2012 and show recent community involvement.  Applications

CAC Educational Scholarship Foundation: This scholarship requires a simple
one-page application and an essay on "The Importance of Establishing Good
Financial Credit During Your College Years".  The scholarship is available
to any California high school senior for use at any accredited college,
university or trade school.  Application deadline is January 16, 2012.

Mount Saint Mary's College Music Scholarship:  The Music Department at Mount
Saint Mary's College has announced the following Music Scholarship Audition
dates:  January 21, February 11, February 25 and March 18.  Audition
requirements include an application form with a short description of your
musical background and performance of two (2) compositions representing
different periods of music.  The on line application and further information

Italian Catholic Federation Scholarship:  One of the programs of the Italian
Catholic Federation is to offer college scholarships to further the
education of students who achieve a total cumulative GPA (3.5 years) of at
least 3.2 and meet one of the following:  (1) Are Roman Catholic and of
Italian Descent and live within the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Arizona,
California, Illinois and Nevada, only where branches of the Federation are
established.  Or, (2) Are Roman Catholic but need not be of Italian Descent
or live where Branches of the Federation are established if either Roman
Catholic parent, guardian or grandparent is a member of the "Italian
Catholic Federation."  Applications can be picked up at the College and
Career Center (D221).  Application deadline is March 15, 2012.

 

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations:  In order to recognize, support, and
encourage the young people of our country who have demonstrated a commitment
to advancing the cause of positive race relations, Princeton University
annually sponsors an annual awards program for high school students-the
Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Applications postmarked by January 31
will be eligible for prizes-including cash awards up to $1,000 for
particularly noteworthy work. If you are a high school student involved in
an activity that is helping to improve race relations in your school or
community, we want to hear from you. If you know of a high school student
who is helping to improve race relations, please encourage him or her to

2012 eQuality Scholarships: The eQuality Scholarship Collaborative awards
scholarships to honor and encourage California students for their service to
the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender community. Scholarships may be used for
post-secondary education at accredited institutions - colleges,
universities, and trade schools. All applicants must have demonstrated
service to the LGBTQ community (applicants of all sexual orientations and
gender identities are eligible), be a resident of northern or central
California, have completed or expect to complete high school or equivalent
between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2012 and plan to attend an accredited
post-secondary institution - college, university, or vocational/trade school
- for the first time in 2012.  For more information and to apply, go to

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund: For Asian and
Pacific Islander American (APIA) students with financial need. To be
eligible students must be of Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity, be a
citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the U.S., be enrolling in
a U.S. accredited college or university in the Fall of 2011, have a minimum
cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) or have earned a GED, must
apply for FAFSA by February 1 and submit letters of recommendations. To

deadline is January 13, 2012.

 

University of Michigan Geisinger Scholarship: This scholarship is for
non-Michigan resident students admitted to the University of Michigan's
College of Engineering.  The award is for $20,000 per year and renewable as
long as the student maintains a 3.0GPA. For scholarship applications or
additional information go to

receipt date for the application is January 13, 2012.

 

Toyota/Steve Young Scholar-Athlete Award: This $2,500 scholarship is awarded
annually to one male and one female college-bound high school senior whose
academic and athletic careers have been exemplary.  Please visit
