Dear BHS Community Members,

On Tuesday, March 29 the Asian Pacific Islander Committee (APIC)
demonstrated excellent leadership in organizing for a donation drive for
Japan Relief. They collected nearly $1500 just by visiting classes during
second period.

This past weekend APIC held a fundraiser by donating a dollar for every
car that honked as they stood on the roadside with signs to create
awareness about the need. A thousand honks = $1000.

APIC has also started an origami paper crane making effort because
DoSomething.org has offered to donate $2 for every crane made. A look at
the C-Building Gallery display case demonstrates how the campaign is a
growing popular and positive activity across the campus. I've heard
reports from teachers and students of inspiring or creative crane-making
sessions and discussions. Cranes mysteriously appear in the Leadership
Office, they're becoming a trendy earring, and rumor is one student made
over 100 tiny cranes that fit into a roll of film container.

At this point it is safe to estimate that the BHS community has generated
at least $5000 in money that will go towards relief in Japan. "Where
Humanity Struggles to Live, Berkeley High Steps up to Give". Indeed, it's
quite uplifting to see so many students positively engaged in
compassionate action. Since January of last year BHS students have raised
nearly $20,000 for relief in Haiti, Pakistan, and Japan.

Funds for money raised go to the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund
established by the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern
California. This unique fund makes possible citizen relief efforts such
as bicycling supplies into areas not reachable by relief organization
vehicles. If you'd like to donate online please do so at
http://kokuajapan.org/berkeleyhigh/.

Thank you,

The BHS Student Leadership Team
