Dear BHS Community Members,

The tragedy of great human suffering, environmental damage, and ongoing
crisis in Japan is something that concerns all of us. Most of the reports
are of devastation or do not include information that can relieve our
imaginations of nuclear nightmares.

But of course in response there are countless acts of compassion, caring,
and courage taking place in Japan and around the world by those who want to
help. In an inspiring show of support from tens of Berkeley High students
who have communicated with me it is clear that they are amongst those who
are moved to action. Indeed, "where humanity struggles to live, Berkeley
High steps up to give."

After taking suggestions and reviewing the organizations we have selected
the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund established by the Japanese
Cultural and Community Center of Northern California. 100% of the funds
raised "will go towards citizen relief efforts in the most affected areas."

PLEASE DONATE AT http://kokuajapan.org/berkeleyhigh/ .

This is a great opportunity to discuss the events with your student and the
ways in which they might be able to help when such a disaster occurs.
Consider perhaps making the donation together. There will also be an
on-campus collection of money on Tuesday, March 29 led by the Asian Pacific
Islander Club, who has already raised money by donating $10 for every
student who came to their meeting this week. Please consider sending money
with your student on that day to participate in this community giving
experience.

As we did with Haiti earthquake and Pakistan flood relief we are employing
the same rallying cry of: "Where humanity struggles to live, Berkeley High
steps up to give." Thank you for your support of our Japan Relief
fundraising efforts. Let's meet our goal of $5000!

Pacific Islander Committee
