SAT WORD OF THE WEEK: COUNTENANCE facial expression; composure
FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS
PSAT score reports will be distributed by BHS English teachers during class
time on Monday, Dec. 14. Juniors will be able to pick up their PSAT score
report beginning on Monday, in the College Center, D221, during lunch or
after school. Juniors must have: BHS ID, a California ID, or Drivers
License to pick up score report. We will not be able to distribute score
reports during class periods.
FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS
2. UC Irvine Stay-Over Program 2009. Students who are at least 16 years old
can apply to experience college life first hand spend the night in a dorm,
tour the campus and residence halls, eat in the dining commons, attend class
with your host student and find out about other activities on campus.
Program goes from January 14-March 5. $25 fee includes two meals and a
t-shirt. A limited number of scholarships are available. Applications
available in D221.

Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221. For seniors,
some colleges will accept test scores from these tests as part of the
application process. Don't forget to list the colleges you want to receive
these scores on your registration form.
*2. CSU APPLICANTS
CSU East Bay is still accepting freshman applications, last day to apply
Dec. 18,2009. For more information about other CSU campuses still accepting
freshmen applications go to CSUMENTOR.ORG.
If you are applying to any Cal State campuses, you are required to take the
ELM and the EPT tests (assessment tests in math and English). You are
exempt from the EPT (English assessment) test if your SAT Critical Reading
score is 550 or above, if your ACT English score is 24 or above or you have
a score of 3, 4 or 5 on either the AP Language and Composition or AP
Literature and Composition test. You are exempt from the ELM (math
assessment) test if your SAT math reasoning test score or SAT subject test
math score is 550 or above or your ACT math score is 23 or above or your AP
test score in AP Calculus or AP Statistics is 3 or above. You can take
these tests at any Cal State campus. The website at CSU East Bay is

to sign up for testing is http://www.sfsu.edu/~testing/eptelm.html. You can
also find practice materials and other helpful information at

CSU applicants must send official test scores from College Board or ACT.
3. ESSAY READERS - Get feedback on your draft of your college essay/personal
statement from experienced essay readers, College Center D221. First come,
first served.

a. Discover Card Tribune Award Program Students with a minimum cumulative
GPA for 9th and 10th grades of 2.75, who demonstrated leadership, are
actively contributing to their communities and have experienced and overcome
a significant obstacle are eligible. Apply at https://www.applyists.net/.
Use access code DISC. Postmark deadline: January 31. More information
available in the College/Career Center. Open to Juniors.
b. eQuality Scholarship Open to residents of northern or central
California who have completed or will complete high school between July 1,
2005 and
June 30, 2010 who plan to attend an accredited college, university or trade
school in the US for the first time in 2010, who have demonstrated service
to the LGBT community (applicants of all sexual orientations and gender
identities are eligible) and will be available for an interview in person or
by phone on March 28 or April 4, 2001. Applications available in D221.
Deadline: February 16. At least 10 scholarships of $5,000 each will be
awarded. For more info go to: info at equalityscholarship.org.
c. California Association of Collectors, Inc open to seniors planning to
attend any accredited college, university or trade school. Winners are
chosen based on writing an essay entitled "Importance of Establishing and
Maintaining Good Credit During Your College Years." Applications available
in D221 and at www.cacesf.org. Awards range from $1,500-$2,500. Deadline:
February 1. Pick up complete Scholarship list in the College Center, D221
d. Ron Brown Scholarship Open to African-American or Black high school
seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership ability,
participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need
who are US citizens or permanent residents. Up to 20 students will receive
$10,000 per year for four years. Deadline: January 9. Apply at
www.ronbrown.org.
e. Gates Millennium Scholars Program Open to African American, American
Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic
American students who are citizens, nationals or legal permanent residents
of the US, with a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
who have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in
community service, extracurricular or other activities and meet the Federal
Pell Grant eligibility criteria. Deadline: January 12, 2009. Applications
available in D221 or at www.gmsp.org.
f. EIGHTH ANNUAL NATIONAL CO-OP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The National Commission
for Cooperative Education, on behalf of the eight NCCE Partner Colleges and
Universities, is pleased to announce and sponsor its Eighth Annual National
Co-op Scholarship Program. As the largest independently sponsored merit
co-op scholarship program in the United States, the National Commission will
award 170 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each, for a total renewable
value of $4,200,000. These merit co-op scholarships will be awarded to high
school seniors and transfer students who plan to participate in college
cooperative education at one of our Partner Colleges: Drexel University,
Johnson and Wales University, Kettering University, Pace University,
Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of
Toledo, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Student must be seniors and
have a 3.5 or better, Application deadline Feb. 15, 2010.
g. KFC Scholarship - The Scholarship offered by the KFC Colonel's Scholars
Program provides funding for: tuition, fees, books, room and board. Awards
can be up to $5,000 per year. The scholar could receive up to $20,000 over
four years to help complete a bachelor's degree. To be eligible to compete
for the KFC Colonel's Scholars Scholarship, an individual must: Graduate
from high school this academic year (between 12/1/09 and 8/31/10), earn a
minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.75, plan to pursue a bachelor's
degree at a public, in-state college or university (start date no later than
9/30/10), be a US citizen or permanent resident, demonstrate financial need.
Selection Process: Completing the online application is the first step.
NOTE: The 2010 application process opened on December 1, 2009. Visit
www.kfcscholars.org to apply. After February 10, 2010, all submitted
applications will be reviewed and semifinalists selected. Semifinalists will
be asked to provide additional documentation in March 2010. After the
semifinalist information is received, an independent selection committee
will meet to select the KFC Colonel's Scholars.
h. Mahatma Rice Scholarship - Write an essay on How will your college
education help you to achieve your lifetime goals? Open to US citizens or
permanent residents who are residents of the San Francisco/San Jose area.
Brochures available in D221. Start your application online at
www.mahatmarice.com/scholarship. After registering, you can print out the
application. Five $2,000 cash awards will be made. Deadline: February 16.
i. Morris Weiss Scholarship: $1500 Education Award. Morris Weiss was a
founder of the Holocaust Center of Northern California. A Holocaust survivor
who testified at Nazi war crimes trials, Morris Weiss was dedicated to
fighting Nazism. In his memory, his family established a scholarship open to
11th and 12th grade Bay Area students each spring. The winning submission
will receive a $1500 education scholarship to be used toward the students
post-secondary education. This year, entrants will be asked to examine the
role of women during the Holocaust. The essay submission must reflect a
genuine engagement with the question posed and constitute a thoughtful
response. The entry will be judged both on the quality of writing and the
ability of the author to meaningfully connect the essay topic to the lessons
of the Holocaust. For more information, please contact Rachel Isquith at

j. Kaiser Permanente Asian Association Scholarship Open to graduating
seniors of Asian descent who are planning on attending an accredited
college, university, trade or technical school in fall 2009 and have a
minimum GPA of 2.6. Applications available in D221 and www.KPAAonline.org.
Five scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded. Deadline: February 26.
k. PDK Prospective Educator Scholarship Open to high school seniors
planning to major in education or undergraduate members of PDK who are
enrolled in an education program at the college level. Deadline: March
10,2010. Applications available in D221.
l. Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarships There are four different
scholarships one for each of the following: African-American students,
Hispanic students, Asian-Pacific students, and one for any senior. The
scholarships are open to students eligible to attend a two or four year
college, university or vocational-technical school who are legal residents
of the US and are under 21 years old. Students may apply for only one of
the scholarships. Applications are available in D221. Scholarships awarded
are a minimum of $1,000. Deadline: February 16.
m. Elks National Foundation Legacy awards 500 four-year scholarships will
be awarded to high school seniors who are US citizens, based on scholarship,
leadership and financial need. Scholarships range from $1,000 per year to
$15,000 per year. Applications are available at www.elks.org/enf/scholars.

Princeton Prize in Race Relations Princeton is sponsoring an awards
program for high school students to recognize, support and encourage young
people who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of
relations among the races. Cash awards of up to $1,000 will be awarded.
The deadline is January 31. For more information, an application and
