ADMINISTRATION

*1. Attention Staff and Students: The American Red Cross will be in the
Community Theater Lobby on Wednesday, taking blood donations!  GIVE BLOOD,
Save a life!  Sign up in the leadership office-D148.  Sign up on line at
HELPSAVELIVES.ORG.  The sponsor code is BerkeleyHS, or just walk in.


CLUBS

1. Come to French Club on Friday, October 2, at lunch to C106 if you are
serious about traveling to France this year!


SPORTS

1. Anyone interested is welcome at open gym on Mondays from 4-6 and
Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30.  We are also offering strength and conditioning
on the track from 4:00-5:00 and in the weight room from 5:00-6:00 on
Tuesdays and Thursdays.  These opportunities are available to all students
attending BHS.

*2. Congratulations to Berkeley High Cross-Country Runners Lorynn Dozier,
Adam Chazin-Gray, Andrielle Jolivette, and Eugenio Geiken for their
individual wins in each of the four events at the first league Meet on
Wednesday.  The Varsity Boys also represented and pulled off their first
team win over Alameda in several years. Go Jackets!


JOBS/VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

1. YouthWorks is the City of Berkeley's Youth Employment Program. The 2009
fall after-school program will be accepting applications from October 1st
until October 31st. Interested youth are required to come in person to the
Youth Works Office at 1947 Center Street, Basement, to pick up an
application, starting Thursday, October 1st. For more info: (510)981-4970 or

COLLEGE/CAREER

*1. Essay workshops- Tuesday, October 6, 7:30-8:30 am for UC/CSU
Applications.  Contact the College/Career Center for more information.

2. Students who need fee waivers: We have ACT fee waivers and SAT fee
waivers. See Ms. Price or Ms. Sandberg before or after school if you need a
fee waiver.

EVENTS/PERFORMANCES

*1. On Friday, October 2nd from 3pm to 5pm, the Berkeley Public Library will
host a community reading during Banned Books Week. After school, please join
us on the sidewalk outside the Central library at 2090 Kittredge St.  The
event will spotlight a wide selection of literature that some people have
tried to ban from libraries in California or other states. Titles include
The Golden Compass, the Harry Potter books, and Catch-22. Listen, watch, or
participate. Fearless readers of all ages are invited to read passages from
their favorite banned and challenged books! 

2. The BHS Spring Musical will be the Broadway Hit: "The 25th Annual Putnam
County Spelling Bee." Auditions coming in October. Show opens April 7th. See
Mr. Winer for details!

3. Become a famous graphic artist!  Create the Artwork and design for this
year's BHS Jazz t-shirt.  Artwork entries are due in the band room (A105) by
October 21.  Voting by BHS jazz students will be October 22nd. Pick up an
entry flyer in the band room today!
