Student Activity Director Chris Young has forwarded an UPDATED list of clubs and student organizations at BHS for the 2009-2010 school year. The list is STILL preliminary because all clubs must reregister annually and not all have done so. Mr. Young expects to update the list in a few weeks and then monthly after that. For more detailed information including faculty advisor, student representative and contacts, come by the Student Activity Office off the food court.
1. Athlete to Athlete Tutoring. Meets Monday and Wednesday after school in C224 and C219. Mission: The club focuses on the student-athlete though peer tutoring between a BHS honor roll athlete and a BHS athlete on the verge of ineligibility.
2. Asian and Pacific Islander Committee. Meets Thursday lunch in room C334. Mission: To strengthen the Asian American community at BHS and to celebrate Asian heritage throughout our community.
3. Baking Club. Meets Wednesday lunch the week of Friday BBQs once a month in room C213. Mission: To raise money by providing baked goods for the student body alongside the BBQ Club.
4. Barbecue Club. Meets 1st Friday of each month in the Courtyard. Mission: To provide Berkeley High students with a tasty burger and an electric atmosphere.
5. Berkeley High School Mountain Bike Club. Meets Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday at various locations. (Contact Student Representative Chet Mahoney at chetcandrive at gmail.com for locations.) Mission: To interest and provide the opportunity for high school students to engage in alternative forms of team sports and exercise.
6. Berkeley High Ultimate. Meets Tuesday 6 to 8 pm and Thursday from 4 to 6 pm at Derby Field and BHS track. Mission: To give anyone who wants a chance to experience the fun-spirited and competitive game of ultimate Frisbee.
7. Black Scholars. Meets Mondays 3:30 to 4:30 in D221. Mission: To create a unified group of students of African American background interested in developing academically.
8. Bridge the Gap. Meets Wednesday at lunch in C311. Mission: Bridge the gap attempts to help close the achievement gap by providing struggling students with a place to go for academic help.
9. Build On. Meets Tuesday at lunch in room D218. Mission: Build On is a nationwide organization that does community service in their area and raises money to build schools in developing countries
10 Chorus Club. Meets at lunch on Thursday, Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 and MWF from 4:30 to 5:30 in rooms A201 and A203. Mission: Singing!
11. Double Dutch Club. Meets Thursday at lunch in G306 and the track. Mission: The Double Dutch Club's purpose is to support the athletic and physical growth of students in BHS while integrating a multitude of personalities in between two ropes.
12. Eco community. Meets Thursdays from 3:45 to 4:45 in G207. Mission: Eco community educates people on environmental issues that effects the world and the community. We would also like to reach out to people in our community.
13. Eco Jackets. Meets Tuesday at lunch in C125. Mission: To make the BHS community aware of pressing ecological and global warming issues.
14. French Club. Meets Fridays at lunch in C106. Mission: To let students learn more about French culture.
15. Film Club. Meets Fridays Thursday at lunch in C311. Mission: To introduce people to watching films and help those who already watch films expand their knowledge and repertoire.
16. Independent Theater Projects. Meeting times TBA in room C213. Mission: Independent Theater Projects, or ITPs, is currently in its 15th year as a completely student-run endeavor. Students are in charge of booking a theater, directing, casting, producing, and acting in three short, one-act plays.
17. Italian Club. Meets Thursday at lunch in Portable 11. Mission: This club will focus on Italian Culture.
18. Key Club. Meets Mondays at lunch in C115. Mission: The Key Club focuses on community service by participating in events such as AIDS walk in SF, the Holiday Meal, and helping the Alameda Food Bank.
19. Kiva Club. Meets Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch in room C232. Mission: The Kiva Club uses the website kiva.org to make micro loans to struggling entrepreneurs around the world. Our mission is to educate others about global poverty and one way to help solve poverty.
20. La Raza Club. Meets Tuesday at lunch in the library. Mission: Our club's purpose is to show our fellow classmates and the whole entire school our Latino culture.
21. Massage Club. Meets Wednesday at lunch in C224. Mission: Massage and stress relieving in the most stressful days of the week.
22. Multicultural Student Union. Meets Tuesday at lunch in C213. Mission: We want a place where multicultural students have a place to be who they are and not have to choose.
23. Quiz Bowl. Meets Tuesday at lunch in C102. Mission: We will represent BHS in academic knowledge tournaments against other high school around the Bay Area and possibly beyond.
24. Reach. Meets Wednesdays at lunch in Conference Room A. Mission: Our club's mission is to end slavery across the world. Raising money provides necessary supplies such as educational aid and other resources to help former slaves earn a living once they are freed.
25. Taste of Culture. Meets Tuesday and Thursdays at lunch on the senior steps. Mission: To bring all females from different races together with different food backgrounds to show other races what their foods are like.
26. The Berkeley High Creative Writing Club. Meets Thursday at lunch in room C135. Mission: To give students a venue to causally show their writing and receive serious feedback and critiques.
27. The Bicycling and Spoken word Poetry Club. Meets Mondays at 3:35 pm at Alston and Milvia. Mission: To explore the correlation between vigorous exercise and spoken-word poetry.
28. The Harry Potter Club. Meets Thursday at lunch in Mr. Becker's Room (A101?). Mission: To be nerdy and worship Harry Potter.
29. The Knitting Club. Meets Fridays at lunch in the library. Mission: Teach younger generations to knit.
30. The UNICEF Club. Meets Tuesday at lunch in C205. Mission: To educate students on poverty in other countries, help other countries by sponsoring fundraisers.
31. Women's Rugby. Meets Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6 pm. on the track. Mission: To get more BHS girls interested in the wonderful sport of rugby.
32. Youth for Christ Club. Meets Tuesday at lunch in C311. Mission: a safe environment for Christians and non-Christians alike to discuss God, Christ, and the Christian faith.
In addition to the clubs above which have officially registered with Mr. Young, the following clubs have advertised at least a preliminary planning meeting in the Student Daily Bulletin: Vocal Jazz and California Scholarship Federation.
