Next week Tuesday - Friday the STAR test will be administered to all 9th -
11th graders, April 21-24. Students will report at 8:30 to their 2nd period
classroom. The test will be administered in the morning. After lunch there
will be regular classes. Seniors have the mornings off and will report to
regular class after lunch which will end at a different time every day (see
schedule below).

The STAR test is mandated under the No Child Left Behind. The information
garnered from the test is used not only internally at Berkeley High to
assess each student's progress but to assess our curriculum and teaching.

In addition, the numbers generated are used to create the API which is a
useful and much used method of comparing and rating California high schools.
We have not been able to generate an API for the last four years because we
have had fewer than 95 percent of our students take the exam. We have not
yet lost federal funding as a result of our poor showing but the school's
reputation has been brought down. Please feed your student a good breakfast
and urge him or her to do their best!
