STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
March 26, 2009           

ADMINISTRATION

1.  Attention Students and Staff:  All lost and found items will be held until March 31.  All remaining items after March 31, 2009 will be donated.  Please come and check for lost items, especially backpacks.  All lost and found items will be placed by the library on April 1 and 2.  A watch was found in the staff parking lot.  If you lost one please check with Parent Resource center room D224.  Must describe it!

2.  RISE will have an all-you-can-eat crab fundraiser on March 27 from 6 pm to 8 pm.  Please help support our students. Tickets on sale in room G111.  Teachers please post flyers in your room.  Thanks.

*3.  BART Ticket orders will be taken on March 30 and March 31 at lunchtime in room D224.   Ticket price is $16.00 each.  You may purchase up to 4 tickets per person.  Cash only. No checks. 

*4.  Attention Senior girls: If you still need a dress for the Senior Ball please go over to San Francisco this Saturday, March 28 from 9 am to 4 pm at Embarcadero 4, street level (Drumm St at Sacramento St).  Entrance on the 2nd level.  Last chance for Princess Project -- the free dress give-away.
              
*5.  Yearbook Announcement: Senior Pages are due by Friday March 27 at the latest! The book will be finished by then. If you snooze you lose. Clubs must have turned in pages by Wednesday March 25.  There will be a two-day sale of the yearbooks Thurs.  March 26 and Friday March 27. Yearbooks will be $65 dollars. After that they will go up to $75 dollars. When yearbooks are distributed in June they will be $80 dollars. Don't wait. They will sell out!

CLUBS

CHORUS CLUB - 3 practices in 1 today.  At 3:30 pm, an optional chorus "tutoring" session somewhere near the band room.  At 4:30 pm, Jan Cameron, Trelawny and the jazz band will rehearse Sir Duke with us in the Band Room, plus rehearsal of Shining Star.  At 5:30 pm, organizational meeting -- mainly to discuss the end of year performance June 1.  Saturday 9-12 am rehearsal for the Performing Arts Showcase in the Community Theater. Sunday 12-3pm Performing Arts Showcase -- free concert in the Community Theater. Any questions: Contact ianfarnkopf at pacbell.net.

SPORTS

*BHS Soccer Players Win Nomads National Championship:
March 23, San Diego -- This weekend three BHS Soccer players battled in the Nomads National Coaches Showcase Soccer Tournament in San Diego. Our BHS players' team won the Gold Division championship, taking 1st place among soccer teams from all over the country.  BHS players Josh Jamieson, Glen Eberts, and Alex Rao, playing with the Bay Oaks Romero club team, put their BHS-honed skills to the test and dominated teams from Arizona, Oregon, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Congratulations to BHS soccer program and to Josh, Glen & Alex!

       
FOR ALL STUDENTS

Project WHAT – Part/time jobs for teenagers and young adults, ages 15-24, who have had a parent in prison or jail, to increase awareness of what it's like to have had a parent in prison or jail and to improve services for youth with incarcerated parents.  The job entails working with a writing instructor to write a true story based on your personal experience, speak publicly at conferences about your experience, and facilitate trainings for adults and youth.  $8/hour for summer training + $100 bonus at the end of the summer.  $10-$12/hour for weekly meetings during the school year, plus fees for presenting at conferences or training. April 23. 

FOR JUNIORS

1.  Questbridge College Prep Scholarship – Open to high achieving, low income juniors (annual household income under $60,000), apply for full scholarships to summer school programs on college campuses, individualized college admissions counseling admissions conferences at Stanford or Yale, and all expense paid visits to college campuses.  Apply at www.questbridge.com .  Deadline:  March 31. 

2.  SAT/ACT TEST DATES – March 31 is the regular registration deadline for the May 2 SAT and SAT subject tests. May 8 is the regular registration deadline for the June 13 ACT.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221. 

3.  Students Rising Above – Open to juniors from a low income family who have overcome obstacles that are not of their own making, have a GPA of 3.0 or above, live in the Bay Area and are planning on attending a four year college.  The scholarship covers all college expenses not covered by other scholarships or financial aid.  In addition, students are given assistance in applying to college, help with dental and healthcare appointments, summer internships, and a mentor.  Applications are available in D221 and at http://studentsrisingabove.org/student scholarships .  Deadline:  April 4. 

4.  Nordstrom's Scholarship – open to juniors who have a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.7;  have made a substantial contribution to the community; are involved in school activities; require financial assistance to attend college and will be eligible to attend a four-year college or university in the U.S.  Deadline:  June 1.  Award:  $10,000 scholarship paid over four years at $2,500 per year.  Applications available in D221.

FOR SENIORS 

1.  URGENT!  Do you still need to order a cap and gown?  Time is running out.  If you have questions please call Achievers directly at 408-441-7200.

2.  San Francisco City College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program is now accepting applications for fall 2009.  Degrees in the hospitality industry, culinary arts, food service management and hotel management are available.  The program is certified by the American Culinary Federation. 3.  COMMUNITY COLLEGE DAY – Thursday, March 26.  If you are considering attending a community college, come to find out how to apply, enroll in classes and learn about all of the many options available to you either to transfer to a four year college or start a high paying career such as chef, auto or airline mechanic, registered nurse, horticulturalist, dental hygienist and many, many more. 
1st period – Diablo Valley College (DVC),
2nd period – Berkeley City College,
5th period – College of Alameda,
6th period – Laney College. 


EVENTS

1.  Class of 2010, Junior Prom royalty is looking for you!  Do you want to be Junior Prom King or Queen?  Come by D148 for more details.

*2.  The second Blood Drive is Thursday, March 26.   If you are 17 or older you can give blood and save lives.  Please sign up for a time slot in D148.  The American Red Cross appreciates your help.

*3.  Be sure to come to MORP, a mind blowing dance on April 3rd at 7pm in our very own BHS cafeteria.  It will be off the hook.  Admission is $10 but if you wear black or white it is $8 because of the theme: BLACK Night Lights.  Get all your friends to come to the most awesome dance the world is yet to witness.

*4.  Come audition for Dance production 2010!  The audition date is tentatively scheduled for March 31 after school, but audition workshops begin today after school. Learn 30 seconds of jazz, modern, and hip hop combination at this workshop.  Come to the A-stage today.

*5.  Attention BHS Juniors – Junior Prom located at the Bayside Pavillion in Alameda.  Junior class vice-president Jeanette is putting together a slideshow.
