SAT WORD OF THE DAY:  DEFAME -- to say something that ruins someone’s reputation.  The Weekly World Whisperer article reporting that the highly respected world leader was a hardened cocaine abuser was just an attempt to defame his character.  

FOR ALL STUDENTS 

Kaiser Permanente in Oakland and Richmond are looking for qualified high school students, ages 15-20, for the LAUNCH (Learn About Unlimited New Careers in Health Care) High School Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).  The program offers paid summer work experience at Kaiser to underserved high school students.  Applications available in D221. Project WHAT -- Part/time jobs for teenagers and young adults, ages 15-24, who have had a parent in prison or jail, to increase awareness of what it’s like to have had a parent in prison or jail and to improve services for youth with incarcerated parents.  The job entails working with a writing instructor to write a true story based on your personal experience, speak publicly at conferences about your experience, and facilitate trainings for adults and youth.  $8/hour for summer training + $100 bonus at the end of the summer.  $10-$12/hour for weekly meetings during the school year, plus fees for presenting at conferences or training. Stanford Educational Studies Program (ESP) offers a wide variety of classes, seminars and workshops for junior high and high school students, everything from calculus and computer programming to knitting and pop culture on the Stanford campus on Saturday and Sunday, April 4-5, 10:00 am-6:00 pm.  $40/student, $20/sibling -- financial aid available on request. FOR JUNIORS

Are you interested in serving in the US House of Representatives as a page?  If you are at least 16 years old and have a 3.0 GPA in core academic subjects, you may apply for a fall or spring appointment.  There is no GPA requirement for pages who work during the summer.  Pages live in the Page Residence Hall in Washington, DC and attend classes at the Page Residence Hall.  Pages must be sponsored by a member of Congress. Questbridge College Prep Scholarship -- Open to high achieving, low income juniors (annual household income under $60,000), apply for full scholarships to summer school programs on college campuses, individualized college admissions counseling admissions conferences at Stanford or Yale, and all expense paid visits to college campuses.  Apply at www.questbridge.com.  Deadline:  March 31.  

FINANCIAL AID PREVIEW FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF JUNIORS -- Thursday, April 2, 6:30-8:30 pm in the BHS library.  Sue Kim, a financial aid expert, will explain how financial aid is calculated for both public and private schools and answer your questions.  She will also provide information on merit aid.  

Students Rising Above -- Open to juniors from a low income family who have overcome obstacles that are not of their own making, have a GPA of 3.0 or above, live in the Bay Area and are planning on attending a four year college.  The scholarship covers all college expenses not covered by other scholarships or financial aid.  In addition, students are given assistance in applying to college, help with dental and healthcare appointments, summer internships, and a mentor.  Applications are available in D221 and at http://studentsrisingabove.org/student-scholarships.  Deadline:  April 4.  

SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- March 31 is the regular registration deadline for the May 2 SAT and SAT subject tests. May 8 is the regular registration deadline for the June 13 ACT.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS

Summer Engineering Seminar -- This FREE summer program on the Santa Clara University campus in San Jose is geared toward current high school sophomores and juniors who have an interest in science, math and engineering.  Students stay on campus and take specially designed courses including lectures, interactive activities and labs.  Applications available at www.scu.edu/engineering/undergraduate/ses.cfm .  Two sessions:  August 2-6 and August 9-13.  Deadline:  March 20.   

Harvard Summer School -- Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.  Offers 200 college courses. Cost varies depending on the program. Financial aid available. Financial aid application deadline April 30, 2009. Information and applications available at www.ssp.harvard.edu.  Program dates:  June 20-August 7.  

Constitutional Rights Foundation’s Summer Law Institute -- Open to current 9th, 10th and 11th graders who are interested in learning more about the American legal system.  Students live on the UCLA campus during the institute.  Cost: $1,200, need based scholarships are available.  For more information, contact Katie Moore at 213-316-2104 or Katie at crf-usa.org.  Applications available at www.crf-usa.org .  Program dates:  August 3-9.  Application deadline:  April 7.  

Youth for Understanding USA -- Live with a host family.  Opportunities available in numerous countries for  students ages 15-19.  Scholarships are available www.yfu-usa.org .  Dates vary with each country’s program.  Application deadline:  April 1.

FOR SENIORS

COMMUNITY COLLEGE DAY -- Thursday, March 26.  If you are considering attending a community college, come to find out how to apply, enroll in classes and learn about all of the many options available to you either to transfer to a four year college or start a high paying career such as chef, auto or airline mechanic, registered nurse, horticulturalist, dental hygienist and many, many more.  1st period -- Diablo Valley College (DVC), 2nd period -- Berkeley City College, 5th period -- College of Alameda, 6th period -- Laney College.  Sign up in the College/Career Center to attend.

Billy J. Givens Memorial Scholarship Fund -- Open to high school seniors from Alameda and Contra Costa Counties who plan on enrolling in a two or four year college in the fall.  $1,000 scholarship.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  April 10.  

Chicano Organizing and Research in Education (CORE) Scholarship -- Open to undocumented seniors of Chicano/Latino descent who will enroll in an accredited college or university in the fall,  demonstrate academic promise through their GPA, college acceptance, recommendations or essay and have financial need.  Scholarships range from $500-$1,000.  Applications available in D221 and at http://www.ca-core.org/services .  Deadline:  April 10.  

Lee Franklin Memorial Scholarship -- Open to senior athletes at Berkeley High who have lettered in at least one, and preferably two, sports at Berkeley High who have a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.25, have financial need and plan to attend a two or four year college in the fall.  $2,000 scholarship with $1,000 awarded for fall 2009 and $1,000 for fall 2010 if a student maintains at least a 3.0 GPA in college  Applications available in D221  Deadline:  April 17.  

Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority -- Open to female high school seniors who are California residents with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate leadership abilities, service to community and are planning to attend a four year university.  At least one scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded.  Deadline:  April 11.  Applications available in D221.  

Pacific National Bank -- Open to high school seniors or graduates who plan to be enrolled full time as an undergraduate in the fall who is eligible according to the scholarship’s family income requirements (see application), resides in the counties of SF, Marin, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Benito, Santa Clara, or Napa and has a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Awards will be based on community involvement, academic achievement, leadership, letters of recommendation and financial need.  Students planning to attend four year colleges are eligible for $1,500 scholarship; those planning to attend community college are eligible for $500 scholarship.  Deadline: April 30.  Applications available in D221.  

East Bay Consortium -- Open to seniors graduating in June from Oakland Unified School District schools, Berkeley High, Richmond High or St. Elizabeth HS or have participated in the East Bay Consortium Pre-Collegiate Academy who will be attending a four year accredited college or a community college, have a minimum GPA of 2.8 if planning to attend a four year college or 2.0 if planning to attend a community college, have actively participated in extra-curricular events and 
have financial need.  Approximately 25-30 $2,500 scholarships for students attending 4 year school and 5-10 $1,000 scholarships for students attending community colleges.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  April 10.  

Anita Baskerville-Harris Scholarship -- Open to graduating seniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 (not including PE, dance and other non-academic courses) who has financial need.  Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000.  Applications are available in D221.  Deadline:  April 1.
