SAT WORD OF THE DAY: PALINDROME -- a word or phrase that reads the same backward as forward.  The sentence, “Anne, I vote more cars race Rome to Vienna” is an example of a palindrome, as is the word “mom."  

FOR ALL STUDENTS 

FREE mock SAT reasoning test.  Saturday, March 14, 8am-2pm, 210 Wheeler Hall, UC Berkeley, sponsored by the UC Berkeley People’s Test Preparation Service.  Prepare for your upcoming SAT!  It is a great opportunity to have a "feel" for the exam before having to take the "real thing."  They will be providing the exams, but bring your own pencils and calculators.  You will receive your score the same day!  This event is free, and all grades are welcome to attend.

Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project (CLYLP) Summer Conference -- This FREE program is open to current 10th and 11th grade students. The week long conference will take place in Sacramento at the California State University, Sacramento campus from July 25th - August 1st, 2009. 120 applicants will be selected to participate in the conference. YouthWorks, the City of Berkeley’s Youth Employment Program, is now accepting applications.  Berkeley residents ages 14-25 will be placed in a variety of jobs, including childcare, recreation & clerical positions within city departments and various community organizations.  The pay is $8.00/hr, and youth may work up to 6 hours/day (30 hrs/week) for a period of 8-10 weeks.  The tentative start date is mid to late June.  Pick up an application in person at 1947 Center Street, basement.  The completed application, with Parental Authorization and all supplemental forms, must be returned by March 31st, along with Photo ID, Social Security Card, Proof of Residence, a typed or word-processed resume. FOR JUNIORS

FINANCIAL AID PREVIEW FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF JUNIORS -- Thursday, April 2, 6:30-8:30 pm in the BHS library.  Sue Kim, a financial aid expert, will explain how financial aid is calculated for both public and private schools and answer your questions.  She will also provide information on merit aid.  

Students Rising Above -- Open to juniors from a low income family who have overcome obstacles that are not of their own making, have a GPA of 3.0 or above, live in the Bay Area and are planning on attending a four year college.  The scholarship covers all college expenses not covered by other scholarships or financial aid.  In addition, students are given assistance in applying to college, help with dental and healthcare appointments, summer internships, and a mentor.  Applications are available in D221 and at http://studentsrisingabove.org/student-scholarships.  Deadline:  April 4.  

Nordstrom’s Scholarship -- open to juniors who have a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.7;  have made a substantial contribution to the community; are involved in school activities; require financial assistance to attend college and will be eligible to attend a four-year college or university in the U.S.  Deadline:  June 1.  Award:  $10,000 scholarship paid over four years at $2,500 per year.  Applications available in D221. 

SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- March 13 is the late registration deadline for the April 4 ACT. March 31 is the regular registration deadline for the May 2 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.  

SUMMER PROGRAMS

*Harvard Summer School -- Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.  Offers 200 college courses. Cost varies depending on the program. Financial aid available. Financial aid application deadline April 30, 2009. Information and applications available at www.ssp.harvard.edu.  Program dates:  June 20-August 7.  

* Constitutional Rights Foundation’s Summer Law Institute -- Open to current 9th, 10th and 11th graders who are interested in learning more about the American legal system.  Students live on the UCLA campus during the institute.  Cost: $1,200, need based scholarships are available.  For more information, contact Katie Moore at 213-316-2104 or Katie at crf-usa.org.  Applications available at www.crf-usa.org.  Program dates:  August 3-9.  Application deadline:  April 7.  

*Youth for Understanding USA - Live with a host family.  Opportunities available in numerous countries. Accepts  students ages 15-19.  Scholarships available  www.yfu-usa.org.  Dates vary with each country’s program.  Applicatino deadline:  April 1.

FOR SENIORS

*STUDENTS ADMITTED TO UC MERCED -- Thursday, March 19, 12:20 pm in the College/Career Center.  Come to a meeting with an admissions officer to get all of your questions answered about the campus.  Sign up in D221 to attend.

Come to a meeting to find out about the Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship. Thursday, March 12 at lunchtime in conference room B.  This scholarship is only for Berkeley High students.  To qualify students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and are planning to attend a four year college in the fall.  At least 10 scholarships of $4,000 per year for four years will be awarded.

CHECK ON THE STATUS OF YOUR CAL GRANT -- You can check on the status of your Cal Grant by creating an account at https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/logon.asp.  You cannot set up an account until your FAFSA has been processed.  

SCHOLARSHIPS

*Chicano Organizing and Research in Education (CORE) Scholarship -- Open to undocumented seniors of Chicano/Latino descent who will enroll in an accredited college or university in the fall,  demonstrate academic promise through their GPA, college acceptance, recommendations or essay and have financial need.  Scholarships range from $500-$1,000.  Applications available in D221 and at http://www.ca-core.org/services.  Deadline:  April 10.  

*Lee Franklin Memorial Scholarship -- Open to senior athletes at Berkeley High who have lettered in at least one, and preferably two, sports at Berkeley High who have a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.25, have financial need and plan to attend a two or four year college in the fall.  $2,000 scholarship with $1,000 awarded for fall 2009 and $1,000 for fall 2010 if a student maintains at least a 3.0 GPA in college  Applications available in D221  Deadline:  April 17.  

Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority -- Open to female high school seniors who are California residents with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate leadership abilities, service to community and are planning to attend a four year university.  At least one scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded.  Deadline:  April 11.  Applications available in D221.  

Pacific National Bank -- Open to high school seniors or graduates who plan to be enrolled full time as an undergraduate in the fall who is eligible according to the scholarship’s family income requirements (see application), resides in the counties of SF, Marin, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Benito, Santa Clara, or Napa and has a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Awards will be based on community involvement, academic achievement, leadership, letters of recommendation and financial need.  Students planning to attend four year colleges are eligible for $1,500 scholarship; those planning to attend community college are eligible for $500 scholarship.  Deadline: April 30.  Applications available in D221.  

East Bay Consortium -- Open to seniors graduating in June from Oakland Unified School District schools, Berkeley High, Richmond High or St. Elizabeth HS or have participated in the East Bay Consortium Pre-Collegiate Academy who will be attending a four year accredited college or a community college, have a minimum GPA of 2.8 if planning to attend a four year college or 2.0 if planning to attend a community college, have actively participated in extra-curricular events and 
have financial need.  Approximately 25-30 $2,500 scholarships for students attending 4 year school and 5-10 $1,000 scholarships for students attending community colleges.  Applications available in D221. Deadline:  April 10.  

Anita Baskerville-Harris Scholarship -- Open to graduating seniors with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 (not including PE, dance and other non-academic courses) who has financial need.  Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000.  Applications available in D221.  Deadline:  April 1.  

Bay Area Council Scholarship -- Open to High school seniors who live in an underserved neighborhood in the Bay Area (Go to www.ffiec.gov/Geocode/default.aspx), plan to enroll full time as a freshman at one of the following schools:  Mills, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, U of San Francisco, and have financial need.  Selection is based on leadership skills, academic honors, community involvement and financial need.  Ten scholarships ranging from $5,000-$10,000 will be awarded.  Applications available in D221 and at http://www.bayareafamilyoffunds.org/programs/scholarship.shtml. Deadline:  March 23.

Wa Sung Community Service Club Award -- Open to graduating high school seniors of Asian descent who are living in Alameda or Contra Costa County and plan to attend college in fall 2009. Selection is based on scholastic achievement, extra-curricular activities, work experience, community service and financial need.  5-7 scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded. Applications available in D221 and at www.wasungserviceclub.org.  Deadline:  April 4.
