COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF JUNIORS -- Tuesday, February 3, 6:30-8:30 pm in the Berkeley High library. Enter at 1980 Allston Way. Angela Price and I will provide an overview of all aspects of the college admissions process. This meeting is for adults only since the students will be receiving this information in their English classes. Spanish translation is available. Come with all of your questions!

Black College Expo -- Saturday, January 24, 9:00 am-6:00 pm, Oakland Army Base, 2498 W. 20th Street, Building 807, Oakland. Bring transcripts and test scores and be accepted on the spot to some schools. Nearly 100 colleges and universities will be present. Find out about internships, jobs and careers. Attend seminars on admissions and financial aid. Tickets are $10.
Latino Education Summer at Cal State East Bay -- Saturday, January 24, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. The FREE summit is open to the public. Parents, high school and junior high school students, school administrators, teachers, counselors, and business and community leaders are encouraged to attend. Topics covered in the workshops and panels (in English and Spanish) will include college information resources; student life experiences on campus; college admissions; and financing a college education through grants, scholarships, and financial aid. Also, on-the-spot admission will be available for Cal State East Bay eligible high school seniors who have submitted an application through the CSU Mentor program and provided transcripts to the university by Jan. 10. SUMMER PROGRAMS
Sophomore and Juniors -- UC Berkeley High School Biotech Training Program offers an 8 week internship program for students interested in learning about biotechnology. Students are paid a stipend of $2,500. The program is open to current sophomores and juniors who are US citizens or permanent residents from low income families and/or a family with little or no history of attending college. Students must have an interest in science, technology or medicine and be ready to work hard. Applications are available in D221. Deadline: March 2.
Academic Talent Development Program at UC Berkeley -- Open to students currently in grades 7-11. This is 6-week session (June 22-July 31) of challenging and stimulating classes is designed for both acceleration and enrichment. Courses are available in a wide variety of subjects. Financial aid is available (application deadline March 4). Application deadline is March 4 for new students and February 18 for returning students. UC Davis Young Scholar Program -- This program offers summer research opportunities in the biological and natural sciences for 40 current sophomores and juniors. Students live in the dorm from June 21-August 1 and work closely with university research faculty on individual projects. For more information and application, go to http://ysp.ucdavis.edu . Fee reductions are available for students based on need. Application deadline: March 31.
Stanford Medical Youth Science Program -- 5 week summer residential program at Stanford open to economically disadvantaged and under-represented sophomore and junior high school students who are interested in science, health and medicine careers and are going to be the first in their family to attend college. Applications available in D221 and at http://smysp.stanford.edu. Deadline: February 28.
Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program -- an 8 week research program at Stanford for students graduating from high school in 2009 and 2010. Program dates: June 15-August 7. Application deadline: February 2. For more information and to apply, go to http://simr.stanford.edu.
Summer Math & Science Honors Academy (SMASH) Information Night -- Thursday, January 29, 6:30 pm at the Level Playing Field Institute, 543 Howard St., 5th Floor, SF. RSVP is required at 415-946-3033 or shannon at lpfi.org by January 21. Space is limited. Find out more about SMASH, a three-year academic enrichment program held each summer for six weeks on the UC Berkeley campus. The program assists high-achieving high school students of color from underrepresented populations to become competitive and successful in science, technology, math and engineering studies at competitive colleges and universities. IT'S TIME TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID -- Sign up to attend one of the workshops on filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Prior to the workshop, pick up a FAFSA On the Web Worksheet in the College/Career Center or download one at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/fafsaws90bw.pdf and fill it out as much as you can. You can estimate numbers if necessary. YOU MUST SIGN UP IN ADVANCE TO ATTEND BECAUSE WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF COMPUTERS. All workshops will be held in the BHS library.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES -- February 10 is the regular registration deadline for the March 14 SAT. February 27 is the regular registration deadline for the April 4 ACT. These are the first rests recommended for juniors. Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.

*Bay Area Council Scholarship Program -- Open to current high school seniors who reside in underserved neighborhood within the nine-county Bay Area who plan to enroll in and attend a full-time undergraduate course of study as a freshman at one of the following Bay Area schools may apply: Mills, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis or University of San Francisco. Financial need will be considered in determining the amount of each award. Potential recipients who receive other large scholarships and cannot demonstrate financial need will be ineligible. Awards range from $5,000 to $10,000. Applications available in D221 and at http://www.bayareafamilyoffunds.org/programs/scholarship.shtml. Deadline: March 23.
Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award Program -- Open to all senior athletes. 25 scholarships of $7,500 each will be awarded based on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service and milk experience. Applications accepted only online at http://www.bodybymilk.com. Deadline: March 6.
Association of Equipment Management Professionals Scholarships -- Open to graduating seniors interested in enrolling in a school offering a two year, diesel technician program. Numerous scholarships up to $2,000 will be awarded. Applications and more information available in D221 or at http://www.aemp.org/pdfs/AEMP_Found_brochure_FP.pdf. Deadline: May 1.
Epilepsy Scholarship Award -- Open to high school seniors and college students who are under a doctor's care for epilepsy. Applicants must first register at www.epilepsy-scholarship.com and then fill out the application. Applications are available in D221. For more information, call 1-800-292-7373 or go to the above website. 25 scholarships of $3,000 each will be awarded. Deadline: May 1.
Black Employees' Association of PG&E -- Open to graduating high school seniors or continuing college students regardless of ethnicity who have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000. Applications available in D221. Deadline: March 6, 2009
Hispanic Employee Association of PG&E -- Open to seniors or current college students of any ethnicity who live in a PG&E service area. Scholarships range from $500-$1,500. Applications available in D221. Deadline: February 27.
Women's Network Employee Association of PG&E -- Open to all college-bound high school senior women who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 who are planning to attend college in the fall, are pursuing a degree in engineering, IT, business, environmental or other majors related to the energy field and have demonstrated leadership through active involvement in community organizations, academic or vocational activities or student organizations. Applications available in D221. Deadline: April 20.

Filipino Employees Association of PG&E -- Open to all college-bound seniors applying to two or four year college regardless of ethnicity who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and is an active participant and/or leader in school and the community. At least ten $1,000 to $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. Applications available in D221. Deadline: March 6.
Mahatma Rice Scholarship - Write an essay on "How will your college education help you to achieve your lifetime goals?" Open to US citizens or permanent residents who are residents of the San Francisco/San Jose area. Brochures available in D221. Start your application online at www.mahatmarice.com/scholarship . After registering, you can print out the application. Five $2,000 cash awards will be made. Deadline: February 16.
