ADMINISTRATION

1.  BSEP Applications are now available for pick-up.  Apply for a BSEP
grant for the 2009-2010 school year.  Deadline for the applications
will be February 27, 2009.  Applications are available at the front
desk with Belinda McDaniel.  You may also request an online copy.

2.  New to BHS or did you lose your BHS Organizer?  Need an extra?
There are a bunch of 08-09 organizers at the front office. Go to the
volunteer desk in the main office to pick one up.  The cost is $3.

3.  Yearbooks on sale in H102B.  Buy them soon they are selling out.
Clubs -- get your yearbook page for $120 for full page.  Seniors --
don't miss out on senior pages.  Space is limited.

4.  Finals are coming up January 21, 22, and 23rd.  You can come
prepared by attending the teacher tutorials which are offered almost
everyday in most subjects.  Ask a teacher for the schedule or pick one
up at the front desk. Consult your incredibly informative BHS daily
planner for details on finals and formulas.

5.  Did you lose a ring?  Can you identify the ring?  If so, come to
the admin office and claim it.  See Belinda McDaniel.


CLUBS

1.  Come kick it with some of the Bay Area's top Slam Poets, as they
help you with writing, editing, memorizing, and performing your poems,
just in time for you to BUST at the 2009 Youth Speaks Teen Poetry
Slam. Thursdays at Berkeley High School Room C334 with former Teen
Poetry Slam Champions Isaac Miller and Terry Taplin.  Starts Thursday,
January 29 at 4pm.

2.  Attention CSF members: CSF community service forms and fundraising
for fall semester 2008 are due this Friday, January 16th in the
College Career center.  Send any questions to csfbhs at gmail.com


SPORTS

1.  Girls Softball conditioning: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday
starting through January 30, 4pm - 5:15pm. Meet in the football
bleachers at the south end.  Girls should wear workout attire and
athletic shoes. Tryouts begin Monday, February 2.  

2.  There will be an informational meeting for all males interested in
playing tennis on January 16, 2009 at 4 pm on the visitors bleachers
of the football field.


JOB OPPORTUNITIES

1.  King Middle School's After school ELL Tutorial is looking for
Spanish bilingual tutors who can work from 3-4pm on Mondays, Tuesdays
and Thursdays, and from 2:15-3:15pm on Wednesdays. We also hire
monolingual English speaking tutors who love kids and can patiently
work with middle school students.  You must be good in pre-algebra,
algebra and/or science, and writing and reading assignments for
English and history classes.  You must be in 11th or 12th grade and
able to get to King on time!  Pay $9.00/hour.  Come by the Science
Building, Room 7 and ask for Ms. Rathwell or Ms. Hamai, or call
644-4811.  

2.  The Teen Center Task Force of the YMCA is a leadership group
responsible for creating the new Teen Center in downtown Berkeley.
The Task Force is looking for teens who want to make a difference and
help design and oversee the construction of the new Teen Center.
Applicants must be at least 15 years old by February 1, 2009.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

1.  Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program -- an 8
week research program at Stanford for students graduating from high
school in 2009 and 2010.  Program dates:  June 15-August 7.
Application deadline: February 2. For more information and to apply,

2.  Summer Math & Science Honors Academy (SMASH) Information Night --
Thursday, January 29, 6:30 pm at the Level Playing Field Institute,
543 Howard St., 5th Floor, SF.  RSVP is required at 415-946-3033 or
shannon at lpfi.org by January 21.  Space is limited.  Find out more
about SMASH, a three-year academic enrichment program held each summer
for six weeks on the UC Berkeley campus. The program assists
high-achieving high school students of color from underrepresented
populations to become competitive and successful in science,
technology, math and engineering studies at competitive colleges and

3.  Latino Education Summer at Cal State East Bay -- Saturday, January
24, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.  The FREE summit is open to the public.
Parents, high school and junior high school students, school
administrators, teachers, counselors, and business and community
leaders are encouraged to attend.  Topics covered in the workshops and
panels (in English and Spanish) will include college information
resources; student life experiences on campus; college admissions; and
financing a college education through grants, scholarships, and
financial aid. Also, on-the-spot admission will be available for Cal
State East Bay eligible high school seniors who have submitted an
application through the CSU Mentor program and provided transcripts to
the university by Jan. 10. Further information is available at

*4.  Applications for Youth Spirit Artworks' stipend summer intensive
arts training program for youth are available to download from our web
site and can also be picked up at our office, 1769 Alcatraz Avenue,
during art studio hours Monday through Friday 3pm to 6pm.

FOR JUNIORS

SCHOLARSHIP FOR SAT/ACT PREP -- East Bay Community Scholarship Fund is
offering a scholarship to pay for an SAT/ACT Prep Course for low
income students living in Alameda or Contra Costa counties.
Applications are available in D221. Deadline:  January 31, 2009.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS - Discover Card Tribune Award Program -
Students with a minimum cumulative GPA for 9th and 10th grades of
2.75, who demonstrated leadership, are actively contributing to their
communities and have experienced and overcome a significant obstacle
are eligible. Apply at https://www.applyists.net/ .  Use access code
DISC.  Postmark deadline:  January 31. More information available in
the College/Career Center.
 
JUNIORS - YOUR PSAT SCORES ARE NOW AVAILABLE. You may pick them up any
day in the College/Career Center at lunch or from 3:15 to 4:00 pm
ONLY. Scores will not be given out at any other times. 


FOR SENIORS

*1.  Black College Expo - Saturday, January 24, 9:00 am-6:00 pm,
Oakland Army Base, 2498 W. 20th Street, Building 807, Oakland.  Bring
transcripts and test scores and be accepted on the spot to some
schools.  Nearly 100 colleges and universities will be present.  Find
out about internships, jobs and careers.  Attend seminars on
admissions and financial aid.  Tickets are $10.

2.  IT'S TIME TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID -- Sign up to attend one of
the workshops on filling out the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA).  Prior to the workshop, pick up a FAFSA On the Web
worksheet in the College/Career Center or download one at
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/fafsaws90bw.pdf and fill it out as much as you
can.  You can estimate numbers if necessary.  YOU MUST SIGN UP IN
ADVANCE TO ATTEND BECAUSE WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF COMPUTERS.  All
workshops will be held in the BHS library.

FOR ALL STUDENTS

1.  Princeton Prize in Race Relations - Princeton is sponsoring an
awards program for high school students to recognize, support and
encourage young people who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing
the cause of relations among the races.  Cash awards of up to $1,000
will be awarded.   The deadline is January 31.  For more information,

2.  Berkeley City College is offering an opportunity to Berkeley High
students interested in computer animation.  This exciting course will
be held for 9 meetings on Saturday mornings.  See Mr. Prolo in H202A
for applications and more info.  Spaces are very limited, and
applications are due on January 16, so don't delay.


SCHOLARSHIPS

1.  Scholarships available for student speakers: The Berkeley Lions
Club is conducting its annual Student Speakers Contest this month.
All participants receive $25.  The winner receives $50 and advances to
the next round.  The contest will be held on Thursday, January 29 at
the Lions regular meeting from 11:45 am to 1:30 pm.  Lunch will be
provided for contestants.  For more information, contact Jeff

EVENTS/PERFORMANCES

1.  Dance Production 2009 is this weekend!  Friday and Saturday shows
begin at 8pm, box office opens at 7.  Prices are $5 students, $12
adults. This show features student-choreographed dances, BHS
musicians, and tasty refreshments.

*2.  Spring Musical!!  Want to make history?  Be in the BHS Spring
Musical, "Double Digits" an original musical written by BHS students.
Auditions are Tuesday, January 27th and Wednesday, January 28th in
A203, the drama room.  All you have to do is sing a song, in any style
you want.  If you would like, you can read a monologue in addition.
Sign up at the drama call board on the middle floor of the A-building.

*3.  Youth Spirit Artworks Grand Opening for our new youth art studio
and retail store will take place Friday January 23rd 4pm to 7:30pm at
1769 Alcatraz Avenue (3 doors west of Adeline). Enjoy free food and
drinks, tile painting, music, and learn about our art jobs program
empowering low-income Berkeley young people ages 16-25. For info.
