STUDENT DAILY BULLETIN
September 9, 2008           

*New to the bulletin today

ADMINISTRATION

1.  Final days to take ID pictures are September 9th from 11:15 - 4:00
pm, September 25th from 11:15-4:00 pm.  

*2. Auditions for the BHS JAZZ ENSEMBLE saxophone section have been
rescheduled to today, September 9th at 3:30 pm in the A building, room
A201.  

CLUBS

*1.  Join the French Club!  Absolutely everyone is
 welcome to join us
 and
come to our weekly meetings every Friday at lunch in C102.  If you like to
travel, be sure to find out how you can go to France with us this school
year!   Once again, come to C102 Fridays at lunch.

*2.  Earphone English:  first meeting of the year, C116 at lunch on
Wednesday.  Need a book?  Come to see our selection of audiobooks -- for SSR
or extra credit.  See friends, and have a cookie.


3.   Want to join Berkeley High’s only Honor Society?  Come to an
informational meeting about CSF today (Tuesday, September 9th) in the College
Career Center at lunch.  We will cover the application process, explain
deadlines and answer any questions you
 may have about the California
Scholarship federation.  For more information contact csfbhs at gmail.com.

4.   Are you interested in being a peer health educator? 10th, 11th, and
12th graders can pick up applications in the health center (H105) for
PASSHEN (Peers Advocating Safety and Sexual Health Education Now).  Don’t
miss your chance to be an advocate for health at BHS!  Applications are
due Wednesday, September
 10th.

5.  Are you a CHESS
 NUT?  Have you always wanted to learn or improve your
chess?  Now’s your chance to make your move!!  Come to C125 any Thursday
from 3:30 to 4:40pm.  Chess is a hip, sexy, and international game with
endless benefits that include improved academic success.  Don’t miss out!

6.  Calling all Berkeley High vocalists!  Shower singers or experienced
vocalists please help us bring down the house for Berkeley high. 20-50
students are wanted who would like to perform 1-2 songs with the Oakland
Interfaith Gospel Choir on October 4th at BHS  A brief and simple audition
is required.  If interested, please contact Trelawny Rose at
vocalfreedom at gmail.com.

7.  Do you want community service hours?  Do you want to travel and help
needy children?  Join
 Building with books!  We meet in C220 every Tuesday
at lunch.  Come check us out!

8.  Best Buddies is back!  Come to the info session today (Tuesday September 9) in H108!  You are not required to be in the club if you come!!  Candy will be provided!

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

1. Looking for a BHS senior female student who would like to work with
a beginning freshman girl who needs help with all major subjects;
math, science, English. Job description is:  Overseeing her homework
and helping her get more organized. Must be reliable, academic,
organized
 and have a good attitude. Beginning with a couple of hours a
week. Pay is $12:00 per hour.  Meet at the Berkeley public library
after school. Time and day not decided as yet but most likely right
after school Monday/Wednesday.  If interested please email

2. Homework Helper needed in math and language arts for 8th grade
girl.  One hour 2-3 times per week. Will pay $12.00 per hour. Call

FOR SOPHOMORES/JUNIORS

PSAT – Berkeley High School is offering the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15
from 8:30-11:30.  All sophomores will automatically be registered for the
test and can take it for free, due to a generous donation from an
anonymous donor.  Juniors can sign up for the test beginning on Monday,
September 8.  Register with Ms. Reed in D173 at lunchtime and immediately
after school.  Cost is $15.  Fee reductions are available for low
 income
students.  The PSAT is an excellent practice test for the SAT, which is
required by the UC’s, Cal States and many private schools.  For juniors
only, it is also the qualifying exam for National Merit scholarships.   

FOR SENIORS

REMINDER:  If you are applying to private colleges that need a
counselor recommendation, your Senior Profiles were due on September
5th (if you are applying Early Decision or Early Action or to any
school that requires a
 recommendation by November 1) and are due on September
19th if you are applying Regular Decision.  You do NOT need to fill these out if you
are applying only to the UC's, Cal State Universities or community
colleges. 

COLLEGE VISITS
Over 100 college representatives visit Berkeley High's College/Career
Center every year.  Seniors may attend up to 10 of those meetings,
with the permission of the teacher whose class they are missing.  Sign
up in advance in the
 College/Career Center and pick up a permission
slip.

SAT/ACT TEST DATES – Today (Tuesday, September 9) is the regular registration
deadline for the October 4 SAT and SAT subject tests.  Friday, September
19 is the regular registration deadline for the October 25 ACT test.  Fee
waivers for low income students are available in D221.
